Lansdowne Kindergarten

At Lansdowne Kindergarten we emphasise fun. We promote care and respect for each other and our environment. We offer inclusive, accessible education to diverse learners and respect all religious beliefs. Children are involved in the flower and vegetable gardens, planting, caring for plants, and harvesting

Our teachers foster children's wellbeing and interests through partnerships with parents and whānau. Literacy and numeracy are woven through the curriculum.

We promote New Zealand's bi-cultural heritage and visit our local Marae.

We have a special relationship with Kandahar Rest Home. We also have a close connection with Pukaha Mount Bruce, where we have an adopted kiwi and sponsor a hectare.

Masterton West Kindergarten

At Masterton West Kindergarten we are very lucky to have a huge outdoor environment and we make the most of it in every way. We have a large vegetable garden, a beautiful bee garden, more than enough fruit trees, a berry garden, annually an excess of 100 giant sunflowers, and four lovely chooks that provide us with fresh eggs.

We emphasise learning opportunities involving hands-on exploration with the natural environment and have a special focus on preparing healthy food grown at the kindergarten. Through fully participating in the process of growing harvesting and preparing food, children are not only learning in an holistic way but also enjoy experiencing new and familiar tastes for morning and afternoon teas and special lunches on occasion.

The teaching team at Masterton West are committed to a philosophy of holistic teaching and learning, manaakitanga and whanaungatanga. We strongly advocate respect and understanding of others similarities and differences, encouraging children to be socially competent and able to initiate and sustain relationships.     We provide a curriculum based on children's current interests. The environment is set up to reflect those interests to ensure all children's learning is catered for. We have two formal interactive mat times daily where we encourage confidence and school preparedness.

Una Williams Kindergarten

Una Williams Kindergarten is situated on the east side of Masterton and is a friendly and welcoming place where children and their families can experience an environment in which they know that their values and Mana are respected.

Our goal is for children to grow up as competent and confident communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit, and secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they will make a valued contribution to society.

As a teaching team, we value strong relationships with parents/whanau/aiga, recognising the contribution this partnership brings to children’s learning and development. We strive to promote a sense of wonder and fun in a safe, positive and caring space.

We offer a child initiated programme where teachers support and enhance children’s current strengths and interests.

As a kindergarten we acknowledge and respect our dual heritage through regular use of Te Reo Maori and respectful practices. We embrace cultural diversity, forging strong links to strengthen our relationships within our community, including Pasifika.

We are fortunate to have a spacious outdoor area with a lovely big front lawn, along with established trees and gardens. This environment provides lots of opportunities for active movement and discovery year round. Teachers understand the importance of active movement for children’s physical and cognitive development and provide a range of physical challenges on a daily basis to support this.

A variety of nutritious food is available daily for children, some coming from our very own garden. Breakfast, morning tea and cooking/baking experiences are offered and children are free to come to the kai table as they so choose.

Te Kōhanga Reo o Hinetearorangi

Te Kōhanga Reo

The kōhanga reo movement is a unique initiative based on total immersion in Māori language and values with the aim of passing on Māori culture to future generations.

Kōhanga reo emphasise the revitalisation of the culture through te reo Māori and are dependent on the active participation of the whole whānau. The kaupapa of kōhanga reo aims to strengthen whānau capabilities in cultural, social, economic, spiritual and political matters. Education, health and wellbeing are inherent within all aspects of the kaupapa. The prime focus is the whānau – its collective development, growth, accountability and wellbeing set within a Māori cultural context.

Kōhanga reo do not regard tamariki in isolation, but as important members of the whānau. The kōhanga reo philosophy is that tamariki will benefit when whānau successfully operate according to the kaupapa. Tamariki are an integral part of whānau development.

The following key goals are the foundation of te kōhanga reo kaupapa established in 1982:

  • total immersion in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga in daily operations
  • whānau decision-making, management and responsibility
  • accountability
  • health and wellbeing of mokopuna and whānau.

The key goals of te kōhanga reo assure that there will be:

  • security in te reo Māori
  • a supportive, caring environment for mokopuna
  • whānau (collective) sharing of responsibilities, knowledge and expertise
  • greater respect and appreciation of each other.

Westside Playcentre

Nau mai, haere mai and welcome to Westside Playcentre

Playcentre is unlike any other early childhood education organisation. At Playcentre, both children and their parents / caregivers attend.

At Playcentre children get the opportunity to learn and explore in a fun and safe environment.

The curiosity and creativity of our tamariki is nurtured in a way that allows them to learn about themselves and their world.

Your child will be given a chance to explore, create, climb, read, sing, experiment, play music, wear costumes, have their face painted (or do it themselves!), garden, do carpentry with real tools, bake and cook, build sandcastles, swing, slide, dance, spend time in nature and get messy.

The activities change every day. Playcentre parents all bring different skills, interests, and cultural backgrounds to add to the rich learning environment.

We welcome families with children aged 0 – 6 years. Mixed age play allows your children to engage with others older and younger than themselves. Pre-schoolers learn how to communicate, share and negotiate with empathy for their younger peers.

At Playcentre, families come together and lifelong friendships are formed.

We welcome you to visit any time during the year. You are entitled to three free visits so come and check out what we do – we would love to meet you and your family!

** Please note : This Centre is not currently taking enrolments**

Kahurangi is an all-day kindergarten in Masterton, providing care and education for babies, toddlers and young children.

Our teachers are passionate about supporting all children’s learning, development, skills and attitudes and habits for future formal learning.

Kahurangi provides an inviting, fun and stimulating environment which inspires children to get involved, explore and investigate.  We are guided by our early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki, to support and extend all children.

Welcome to Lansdowne Private Childcare

Lansdowne Private Childcare and Pre-School Centre is privately owned and has been caring for children in Masterton since 1993. We are dedicated to providing high quality care & education in a safe and relaxed enviroment that we hope will be familiar and comfortable for your child.

Educational Programme

Lansdowne Private Childcare and Pre-School has an educational programme which is planned in advance with a combination of structured activities and free play, and is always flexible. It includes stories, music, puzzles, dough, blocks, painting, water, collage, dramatic play, fitness activities, sand play, cooking, self help skills and many other activities, which may include visits outside the centre as well as special interest visits.

The programme is based around the project approach and is designed so that children grow, develop and learn at their own pace.

We are committed to running our early Childcare Centre in a relaxed manner, promoting a nurturing environment which provides quality care and education where children feel safe, happy and secure, as they would do in their own homes. The children are exposed to a wide range of stimulating age appropriate activities and warm and caring staff.

We are a multi-cultural centre with a programme of activities to suit all ages and stages of a child's development, this includes allowing children to learn in their own time and at their own level to explore their imaginative and artistic capabilities and providing them with the love, nurture and trust they need in order to achieve this.

Our centre life is assessed and evaluated reflecting children's individual development as well as group learning. Our thinking and talking books, wall displays and photo's show children's participation in centre life. We offer 4 year old children in preparation for school a group time which encourages self help skills and an extension to the day to day literacy and numeracy activities the centre provides.
