Childcare options in Takaka

Takaka Playcentre is about empowering and supporting adults (parents, caregivers) and children (ages 0 – 6) in our area to grow, learn and play together. With free education offered to adults (free NZAQ training) while tamariki learn through play.

We have 16 different areas of play to explore the areas include dough, science, painting, family play, carpentry and many more!!

We are a volunteer run centre who values that every family brings different qualities and experiences to our centre.  Adults contribute as little or as much as they can, from being in an officer’s role on the committee, helping with working bees or setting up different play for the tamariki on session.

Playcentre is a group of parents working together to support each other and their tamariki.

SPACE is a service provided through Playcentre on a Wednesday afternoon. It allows parents to connect with other new parents and their babies (ages 0- 1).  A supportive environment is provided where parents can share their experience and meet life long friends for both their babies and themselves. For new parents it can be overwhelming and this is a great place to explore parenting and children’s development in a safe, facilitated environment.

The Kindergarten has a strong focus on creativity, nature education, biculturalism, literacy, numeracy, science & sustainability. 

The children are proud of their extensive flower and vegetable garden, allowing active exploration and the opportunity to connect with nature and nourish body, mind and spirit.  

Visitors to our Kindergarten enhance our programme & offer experiences that are valued.  For example,  we have Workshops for whanau , visiting yoga teachers, story tellers, bicultural teachers, & ‘buddies’ (tuakana-teina) from the local school. 

We have a special relationship with the local iwi & our programme supports the cultural identity of all children.  

We have a strong relationship with our wider community, take part in regular excursions and run excellent transitions in, between and beyond our kindergarten.  

We are fully involved in Golden Bay's Kahui Ako/Community of Learners. We value and encourage parent & whanau involvement in our learning environment.  

Our Kindergarten Teachers are 100% trained, registered and committed, and receive on-going professional development.

We pride ourselves on providing an enriched educational environment where every child’s preschool learning is fostered and extended. Our centre’s programme has a strong emphasis on creativity, numeracy, literacy and a sense of respect and value for people, places and things.  

Our centre is conveniently situated in the Takaka Township and caters for children throughout the Golden Bay district.  

Golden Kids is governed by a Board of Trustees, made up from parent representatives (elected every year), Head Teacher and Centre Administrator. Our Centre is an Incorporated Society with Inland Revenue charitable status.
