A little about us

Welcome to WildHeart

WildHeart – Makuru Mātā is a safe haven for tamariki to express their thoughts and feelings with an open heart, and grow a loving nature through exploring the joy of giving and receiving aroha.

Ākonga will grow their love and appreciation for nature, whilst exploring who they are in a natural, nurturing environment – rich in learning opportunities. Tamariki, whānau, kaiako and iwi each hold a special place at WildHeart and bring a variety of experiences and cultures, unique to them as individuals.

Whānau aspirations are pivotal in how our early learning programme is implemented. We embody our WildHeart values of Kotahitanga, Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga, Mauritanga, Whakamana, and Hauora and by leaning into our values and living them through daily practices.

Our fully catered centre provides all meals, nappies and wipes for your little ones throughout the day. WildHeart is cloth nappy friendly.

Learning Spaces

Aruhe Pēpē & Aruhe Nonohi (0 – 2 years)

Our two Aruhe spaces are an enriched environment of aroha, kindness and calm – true to the nurturing processes of primary and secondary caregiving. RIE and Pikler principles are what underpins these two spaces. It is an environment of support, guidance and freedom of choice with respect for each and every one of our Aruhe Pēpē and Aruhe Nonohi tamariki.

Tarawera (2 – 3.5 years)

Our toddler space is an environment of guidance, where children are supported to be wild of heart but loving in nature. Whilst RIE and Pikler principles underpin the care routines, our ākonga in this space are also beginning to experience the joy and wonder of Reggio Emilia principles, which are focused on the child being respected as a confident and competent learner. Kaiako work closely alongside these tamariki to grow their interests through freedom to explore and discover for themselves. All whilst exploring the understanding of limits and boundaries with kindness, compassion and understanding as a foundation for ngā tamariki.

Pikopiko & Tutoke (3 – 6 years)

Our two preschool spaces – a Pikopiko & Tutoke – are full of freedom to move, explore and discover in nature and on regular excursions to make connections within our local community. Our art studio, Taupuni Mahi Toi, will be full of discovery each and every day to insight wonder and joy in every child. There are opportunities for ākonga to take responsibility as tuakana-teina within these spaces, and an open mind and an open heart is nurtured as the key to building a strong, unshakeable foundation for ngā tamariki.
