BestStart Avondale
BestStart Avondale is located on Wolverton Street, close to the New Lynn Train Station and the South Western Motorway. We offer a wonderful home like atmosphere with high quality learning spaces. Most of our tamariki will move to Blockhouse Bay, New Windsor, Chaucer and New Lynn Primary Schools.
At BestStart Avondale, our parents are a vital part of centre life and our philosophy. We pride ourselves on positive working relationships with whanau. Families are involved in various events throughout the year including centre programmes, fundraising and annual celebrations of cultures and community events.
Our programme is based on the principle of respect, responsibility and community through exploration and discovery. We provide a supportive and enriching environment based on the interests of the children through a child-led curriculum. We have three dedicated rooms caring for children of different age and developmental stages. The teaching team implement teaching methods and strategies that best suit children of different interests and needs that are woven together with Te Whāriki (Early Childhood Curriculum) and BestStart’s unique Be School Ready initiative.
Manawa Nursery (0-2 years) - The Infants room is a cosy room where babies are offered many open-ended play objects to explore freely. Each infant under two years old has a primary caregiver who works collaboratively with your family to meet the child’s individual routine and learning needs.
Rewa Rewa (2 – 3.2 years) - The Toddlers room provides free flow between indoor and outdoor areas for tamariki to explore and make their own discoveries. We have a covered deck area which allows for creative projects to begin. This is where our toddlers enjoy their hands-on experience by participating in art activities, dance and music. Our experienced teachers work closely with the children to help them develop social and self-help skills as well as starting their early literacy and numeracy learning.
Waitemata (3.2- 6 years) - The Preschool room is a well-resourced room where children are able to engage deeper in their play and learning with support from the teachers. They further develop their self-help and social skills, learnt from toddler room. The teaching team incorporate different teaching methods and strategies within daily activities to further children’s early literacy and numeracy, ensuring that all the children build a solid foundation for the formal learning experience at school.

Our early childhood centre is passionate about community, family and working together to help children grow. In our early childhood centre we provide our children with a stimulating, safe, caring and inclusive environment for them to learn and grow in.
Centre Vision
Our ideal ‘graduate’ will look like: Someone who has emotional stability and sees themselves as a capable and competent learner, secure in who God has made them to be. They will have a love for learning, instilled through a sense of curiosity and wonder of the world around them.
Our philosophy
Welcome to Avondale Christian Kindergarten where we believe that every tamaiti / child is a gift created by God in His image, and designed for spiritual relationship with Him. We aspire to encourage and support tamariki / children to be secure in the knowledge of who God has made them to be. We aim to teach and nurture tamariki within a stimulating, safe, caring and inclusive environment where the early childhood curriculum Te Whāriki is underpinned by our Christian values and beliefs.
We recognise that tamariki cognitive, social, cultural, physical, dispositional*, emotional and spiritual development is holistically woven together with their spiritual development at the core. Our planned programme provides opportunities for children to develop in all these areas, both individually and as a group.
Children and kaiako / teachers are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and behaviour and to be thoughtful and considerate of others and the environment as being precious to God.
We believe in actively listening to the many voices and perspectives of tamariki, acknowledging their God-given strengths. In doing so we seek to support the development of knowledge, skills and dispositions that will empower them for life’s journey. We aspire to instill in each tamaiti a love for learning and a sense of wonder and curiosity for God’s world around them.
We value the differing cultural backgrounds and values that whānau / families bring and celebrate the diversity and richness that this contributes to our kindergarten. Partnership with parents and whānau is fostered as we strive to build strong links between home and kindergarten, to further develop tamariki ongoing learning pathways.
We are committed to the bicultural heritage of Aotearoa New Zealand and all tamariki will have the opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding of Te reo Māori (Māori language) and tikanga Māori (Māori cultrue) through a biblical lens.

We value the importance of play to develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally, and gain the self-confidence required to engage in new experiences and environments.
Our teaching philosophy aims to support children’s learning by working alongside children. Our teachers aim to facilitate learning experiences based on children’s interests and dispositions to enhance their learning and build on their prior knowledge.

Our Teina/Little buddies room provide a safe and nurturing environment for infants and toddlers. ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ and we believe that for children to learn and grow in a safe and healthy environment, all the teachers have the collective responsibility to interact with and nurture the children. This will encourage our little people to develop warm relationships with everyone in their environment and helps very young children to have smooth transition into the new environment. The atmosphere is calm and nurturing, and teachers set up a range of learning experiences for children to explore their skills, strengths and interests. We have a spacious outdoor area with a natural setting for our young children. Each child also has a daily communication book where teachers record about their day and routines.
Tuakana/Big Buddies Room
Set up for our 2 to 5 year olds, the concept of the tuakana-teina relationship is strongly implemented by encouraging and motivating our older tamariki to help and support the younger tamariki. Children are provided with various learning experiences in different curriculum areas based on their interests and strengths and we organise trips/excursions to extend their interests and learning.

We have a strong foundation in Dr Maria Montessori's philosophy and, through our 'prepared environment', we provide unique learning programmes that incorporate all aspects of traditional Montessori methods while meeting the strands and learning outcomes of Te Whāriki the New Zealand Early Learning Curriculum.
The original 1920's house has been beautifully converted into a new spacious preschool which retains the warm homely feeling and character of the era yet has all the benefits of a modern building.
Our large outdoor area provides a great environment for your child's outdoor activities. Casa Montessori is a safe, calm and respectful environment and a wonderful place for your child to be. We cater for children between 2 and 6 years.
Our Mission
It is our mission to provide a high quality Montessori environment which enables children to begin their learning journey through life. Our undertaking is to cultivate a life-long love of learning in our children which inspires them to realise their full potential. Our children will grow to be confident and knowledgeable learners which are healthy in mind, body, and spirit so that they go on to make a valued contribution to the community and wider world.
What we do
We provide a well prepared learning environment which is based on Montessori education methods integrated with Te Whāriki.
The preschool is an aesthetic, calm, warm and nature friendly home-like indoor and outdoor environment with well-organised learning materials in a scientifically designed sequence that is attractive for children to work within.
Children have the opportunity to work and learn alongside others with mixed ages, abilities, genders, cultures and learn to learn to be receptive, cooperative, warm and graceful in a positive atmosphere. We incorporate a bi-cultural approach within the preschool environment by embracing home cultures and customs that honour the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Avondale Kindergarten
Kia ora and welcome to Avondale Kindergarten
Avondale Kindergarten has inviting indoor and outdoor play areas where children are encouraged and nurtured to actively discover and experience the world around them.
Avondale Kindergarten’s qualified teaching team work alongside children to help them realize their full potential.
Here at Avondale Kindergarten there is a strong commitment to embracing the cultural diversity within our local community.
Our kindergartens have early childhood qualified and registered teachers. These teachers are dedicated to, and passionate about, early childhood education. Avondale kindergarten has a Head Teacher plus teachers and support staff. Quality learning programmes are based on the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whãriki.
Our learning philosophy
For the past 110 years, the Auckland Kindergarten Association has been igniting young minds by encouraging them to explore their imaginations through play. For many of us, kindergarten was where we began our life of learning; it was where we started learning skills like sharing, tolerance, patience, respect and self-confidence.
We view children as capable, competent, life-long learners, and our philosophy encourages children to make their own learning choices, problem-solve and observe and explore at their own pace…with support from teachers, parents, wider whānau and their peers. We value the importance of child-initiated, play-based experiences. Our kindergarten teachers nurture your children’s interests and natural curiosity by working alongside them, expanding language and introducing mathematical and science concepts, as well as literacy, digital technology and sustainable practices.
Our centres have gardens and natural outdoor spaces where children can create, explore, be imaginative and expressive. There’s plenty of room to safely run about, being imaginative and physically active. In fact, the natural world is essential to free-range play. AKA encourages each kindergarten community to explore and enrich their diversity and uniqueness. Some have regular excursions into the local community; some are Enviroschool kindergartens that live and breathe sustainable practices; while others engage in long-term research on child interest-based programmes of learning.
As an organisation, we formally acknowledge the dual heritage of Aotearoa / New Zealand, and work to uphold the spirit and intent of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in each kindergarten. We are accessible, secular and welcoming to the wide diversity of tamariki and whānau who attend our centres, and value ongoing partnerships between teaching teams and leadership staff with families and whānau. We value ongoing learning for teachers, parents and whānau, and the sharing of knowledge, skills and attributes is fundamental to achieving the best learning outcomes for children. Teachers and staff can access collegial professional time to ensure that quality practice is enhanced so current theories of learning and development within New Zealand’s world-class Te Whāriki early childhood curriculum are shared and understood.

Chrysalis Early Learning Centre
Dreamt, Designed and Developed by Founders, Nikeeta Singh and Dr Darius Singh:
We wanted you and your Child to be awe-inspired every day – so we designed our own "personal meanings" and "messages of hope" and "wow factors" throughout our child care centre.
For example:
- our building is the shape of a curved waka with 100 sails (representing 100 cultures of NZ) to transport your child into an intrepid journey of lifelong learning,
- laser-lit hallways that project the flowing and swirling local Whau river onto the floor,
- giant indoor cocoon pods to read, play or sleep inside!,
- peaceful music & soft twinkling starlight in our cot rooms where we project a life-like replica of the night sky onto the ceiling so your baby can sleep under the stars (!),
- generously spacious indoor play areas,
- our own trademarked “play-garden®” concept,
- huge outdoor playgrounds with tree huts, Pacific bure, fale & wharenui and teepee huts in our little village, an endless discovery maze, fruit orchards, Pacific beach style sandpits, challenging obstacle courses…,
- sustainable solar powered centre with full rainwater harvesting systems for our laundry and bathrooms....
We wanted to give your Child the best head start for school – so we invented and patented an award winning "Learning Roots & ShootsTM" online system that shows learning outcomes for your Child growing on their personalised Learning Tree;
We wanted you to feel proud that you are sending your Child to the best Preschool, Daycare, Kindergarten or Childcare Centre in NZ – so we worked hard to earn a Multi Award Winning status for Chrysalis and its sister centres, with over 15 nationally recognised awards & accolades since we started in 2010 in areas of play space design, teaching leadership, innovation, sustainability, & our popular "Learning Roots and ShootsTM" online system;
We wanted the best teachers for your Child – so we attract and hire the best, then we train with our best, with our very own Curriculum Manager who supports our teachers' registration portfolios, curriculum planning, mentoring, and constantly ensure the highest quality outcomes for children are being achieved. We have become a sought after centre by teachers wanting to grow, experience and develop their careers, and as such, we only work with leaders and teachers who are equally passionate about our shared philosophies, values and vision for "lifting aspirations" and "messages of hope" in early childhood education;
We wanted to put your Child on the steepest trajectory of hope and possibilities in life – so we invested heavily to create "never seen before" innovative features in our environment, and teaching & learning programmes to give your Child the best head start we possibly can;
We wanted our Teachers to feel valued and empowered so they can give your Child their best every day – that's why we invest back into professional development of our teaching teams so they can continue to learn and deliver the latest best practices in early childhood education for your child, you and your family. We also take care of our colleagues' health and life insurance, financial support and well-being needs as part of our commitment to offer one of the most attractive Benefits and Care Packages in the industry;
We wanted to give your Child our full focus and attention at daycare – so we ensure we have the best Teacher : Child ratios (1:4 and 1:8) and we remain in the highest band of qualified and experienced teachers from Avondale throughout the West and North West Auckland suburbs of Glendene, Glen Eden, Henderson, Hobsonville, Huapai, Huia, Kelston, Kumeu, Laingholm, Massey, New Lynn, Swanson, Te Atatu, Titirangi, Waimauku, Waterview, Westgate, & Whenuapai;
We wanted to ensure your Child's nutrition is personally looked after while they are in our care – so we provide diet specific, healthy, nutritious meals every day by either our qualified chef or professional catering service that specialises in ECE centres.

Nurture Early Learning - Avondale
When you enter a Nurture Early Learning Centre you will also feel the value that has been placed on providing our families with generous spaces to engage with and move within. At Nurture we strive to create meaningful learning spaces that our teachers are proud to take ownership of, and that our families will treat as a second home.
A Nurture Early Learning Centre offers several unique spaces which expand our children's environment during their time here. Our 10 years serving community families has highlighted to us the importance of offering these unique areas allowing smaller groups to come together for meals in the kitchen Cafe or special time in our upstairs learning space we call the Treetops. We value our Cafe as a place of life and relationships where we seek to make eating a positive experience, inspire kindness and nurture conscience. We celebrate it as a place to explore our various cultures and embrace togetherness.
“He kai kei aku ringaringa” (“I can eat my food with my own hands”). Here, we can offer our children opportunities for self-empowerment and support their development as competent and confident eaters. We believe that nutrition education happens through play and investigation by utilising each child's natural curiosity to explore, thus reconnecting them with the food we eat and how it gets to their plate. In our large Treetops space, children can engage in deeper learning opportunities and investigations, extend their creativity in the separate art atelier, or participate in our Moving Smart Program, or story yoga sessions.
The Nurture outdoors space is designed to reflect nature and provide enough open-ended opportunities for our teachers to create different learning environments and physical challenges to keep our children inspired and engaged

Our vision is to work in partnership with families, whanau and communities to enable children to achieve their learning potential.
Ko tō mātou tirohanga hei mahi ngātahi i te taha o ngā whānau me ngā hāpori, kia āwhinatia ngā tamariki, kia tū pito mata ai rāatou, hei rangatira mō āpōpō.
We are committed to being a progressive and responsive leader in early-childhood education. We do this by enhancing our services, investing in our people, developing our support structure and continuously improving the educational outcomes and experiences of our children, families and the communities we serve.
Some facts:
- We’re licensed to educate and care for 15,000 full-time children daily.
- 18,000 families use BestStart services annually.
- We have over 270 centres nationwide located from Whangarei to Invercargill.
- Each centre is managed by a Centre Manager who is supported by a local Area Manager. This gives our centre teams ongoing quality training and support.
- Te Whāriki, the world-wide acclaimed national early childhood education curriculum, is used in all centres.
- We have over 4500 permanent teachers nationally. Over 90% of our permanent teaching staff are either fully qualified with a diploma or bachelor of teaching (ECE) or higher, or are in training. These figures are very high by national standards within the ECE sector.
- We provide a two-year Advice and Guidance Programme for all recently certified teachers, providing further mentoring and training. This gives strong support for teachers from provisional registration to full teacher registration with the NZ Teachers Council.
- We regularly spend around $4 million on teacher training per annum.
We’re for children
At our heart is our commitment and passion for children. Central to this belief is our focus on the holistic development of children. We support children to explore the world around them, learning through relationships, creating a love of learning in an ever-changing world. Exploration, friendship and fun are part of the journey.
We’re for good
BestStart is a registered charity owned by the Wright Family Foundation. We support initiatives and programmes within BestStart and the wider early-childhood education sector (ECE) that support good outcomes for all children. We do this because we want to make a positive difference to the lives of all children.
Innovation leads us
At BestStart, innovation guides our thinking. We advocate positive change for learners through our research and practice. We’re proud to be thought leaders within ECE, openly challenging ourselves to think differently to provide the best for our children, families and staff.

Our Philosophy
We at Learning Stars believe in the individual child and the rights of that child, and in doing so we base our philosophy on the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum Te Whāriki. We intregrate our own image of the Child with four mai principles of Te Whāriki:
- Empowerment: Our curriculum empowers the child to learn and grow through supporting them to become interactive learners and constructors of knowledge.
- Holistic Development: Our curriculum reflects the holistic way that children learn and grow through acknowledging them as unique free-spirited individuals.
- Family and Community: The wider world of family and community is an integral part of our curriculum and we foster active participation from all three protagonists.
- Relationships: Children learn through responsive and reciprocal relationships with people, places and things and we encourage the participation in meaningful relationships.
Our Teachers
We pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching staff. They are employed for their passion, love, knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to children. Together we work towards achieving a common goal.
