Beachlands/Maraetai Playcentre

We are a relaxed and welcoming group of families. The current membership is approximately 22 families and 37 children. We strive to provide quality sessions for our children and a supportive environment for our parents.

Located within the grounds of Beachlands School our purpose-built premises house a wide range of resources and a spacious and attractive outdoor environment.

Monday 9-1 pm: Big Kids session (From age 3.5)

Two supervisors lead children in the outdoors. Usually based at Omana Regional Park the children explore the park with a new adventure every week, based on the children’s interests. From time to time they move around other locations in the community interacting with the environment and locals along the way. The small group (8 max) allows for the development of friendships and group cohesion.

Tuesday – Friday 9-12 pm: Family sessions

Family sessions are open to all enrolled members and visitors. Parents share the running of the sessions and planning of activities to meet the interests and educational needs of the children.

Who is BestStart?

BestStart is for families who want more from early-childhood education. Safe, nurturing and educationally focused, we’re committed to growing caring people with curious minds.

Together we teach, learn and nurture.

Our vision is to work in partnership with families, whanau and communities to enable children to achieve their learning potential.

Ko tō mātou tirohanga hei mahi ngātahi i te taha o ngā whānau me ngā hāpori, kia āwhinatia ngā tamariki, kia tū pito mata ai rāatou, hei rangatira mō āpōpō.

We are committed to being a progressive and responsive leader in early-childhood education. We do this by enhancing our services, investing in our people, developing our support structure and continuously improving the educational outcomes and experiences of our children, families and the communities we serve.

Some facts:

  • We’re licensed to educate and care for 15,000 full-time children daily.
  • 18,000 families use BestStart services annually.
  • We have over 270 centres nationwide located from Whangarei to Invercargill.
  • Each centre is managed by a Centre Manager who is supported by a local Area Manager. This gives our centre teams ongoing quality training and support.
  • Te Whāriki, the world-wide acclaimed national early childhood education curriculum, is used in all centres.
  • We have over 4500 permanent teachers nationally. Over 90% of our permanent teaching staff are either fully qualified with a diploma or bachelor of teaching (ECE) or higher, or are in training. These figures are very high by national standards within the ECE sector.
  • We provide a two-year Advice and Guidance Programme for all recently certified teachers, providing further mentoring and training. This gives strong support for teachers from provisional registration to full teacher registration with the NZ Teachers Council.
  • We regularly spend around $4 million on teacher training per annum.

We’re for children

At our heart is our commitment and passion for children. Central to this belief is our focus on the holistic development of children. We support children to explore the world around them, learning through relationships, creating a love of learning in an ever-changing world. Exploration, friendship and fun are part of the journey.

We’re for good

BestStart is a registered charity owned by the Wright Family Foundation. We support initiatives and programmes within BestStart and the wider early-childhood education sector (ECE) that support good outcomes for all children. We do this because we want to make a positive difference to the lives of all children.

Innovation leads us

At BestStart, innovation guides our thinking. We advocate positive change for learners through our research and practice. We’re proud to be thought leaders within ECE, openly challenging ourselves to think differently to provide the best for our children, families and staff.

Chasing Joy Early Learning

Chasing Joy

How did Chasing Joy get its name?

Joy is about being in the moment, experiencing great delight and happiness brought about by something extraordinarily satisfying.  Joyous people look for the good in every situation - which is a real skill.

Joy was also Todd’s Mum’s middle name.  Carolyn passed away when Todd was just eight years old.  From all the stories we’ve been told and what Todd remembers of his Mum, Carolyn was a joy by name and a joy by nature.  She was warm, clever, full of life, generous and always saw the good in people.  We think naming our centre after someone with qualities like those makes for a pretty awesome foundation.

Curiosity is a natural by product of joyful learning.  If there is one thing we wanted  (and still want) for our children it is to be curious about the world around them; to be able to live in, and appreciate being in the moment.

Who are the owners?

Chasing Joy Early Learning is a privately owned centre in the beautiful community of Beachlands, Auckland.

Todd and Anneke (said Arnika) have dreamed of owning and running a centre since their own children were very young.

Anneke is a primary trained teacher.  She is passionate about high quality education and supporting teachers on their own journeys.

Todd is the other director.  Although not in the centre on a daily basis, he is Mr Fixit on the weekends, and offers a cool head and always a common sense approach.

Chasing Joy is our only preschool.  Our whole hearts are invested in making this centre everything we would have wanted for our own children. We hope our place brings joy to children, their whanau, our kaiako (teachers) and the wider community of Beachlands.

Look forward to seeing you soon

Our Philosophy...

At Early Connections, we believe ...

That all people young and old come together as one, connecting through life experiences, dreams and goals.

We appreciate individuality, inclusiveness, dignity and respectfulness.

We believe that if children feel safe and secure in trusting relationships and a safe homely environment they will confidently engage in play, exploration, contribution and relationships.

We value the environment and all that this can offer through natural exploration and inquisitiveness. We offer many opportunities for learning, education, and life skills and we embrace this in all that we do.

We support our local community and all that if offers.  Exploration is an important aspect of child development and our natural environment that surrounds us offers plenty of opportunity for this.

Through our experiences and every day learning we believe that we can all connect and learn from each other’s knowledge and passions.

Early Connections values professional and personal development and aims to meet the needs of our children, family, and teachers through a range of expertise from both within our team and externally.
