Kauri Kids Birkdale

We're a small, homely centre on the North Shore. We've been at the heart of the Birkdale community for almost 40 years. During this time we've seen generations of whānau return with their tamariki, as well as attracting new whanau to the community.

We've built long-standing relationships with the wider community, local schools and staff from the adjoining community house.

Our wonderful natural outdoor environment includes a large, covered, all-weather sandpit and a child-size whare, complete with carvings and children's artwork.

Why choose Kauri Kids?

At Kauri Kids, we believe that with the right nurturing all tamariki can be as mighty as the kauri tree. Our goal is to enable our tamariki and their whānau to develop the skills they need to reach their potential and live a healthy and prosperous life. Kauri Kids' vision and values:

Our commitment to sustainability.

We empower tamariki to care for the environment so they can become kaitiaki (custodians), use resources wisely, and take an active role in fighting climate change. Each centre has its own environmental initiatives. These could include:

  • using cloth wipes and nappies instead of disposables
  • wet bags instead of plastic bags
  • worm farming and composting food scraps
  • beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap
  • collecting and repurposing bread tags
  • recycling yoghurt pots and baby food plastic pouches
  • a shared vegetable and herb garden.

The power of free play

We're strong believers in the power of free play and play-based learning. That's why you won't see many 'typical' toys or structured activities when you walk into our spaces. We set tamariki up with real, everyday objects and natural play materials, and leave it up to them to choose what interests them. We help them to develop their imaginations and explore the environment around them. Children love moving and being physically active is an important part of everyday life. With this in mind, we actively encourage children to move freely on their own, as their capabilities and development allow. Tamariki are also given daily opportunities to practice climbing, balancing, kicking, throwing and jumping.

Nurturing relationships

We value respectful relationships. At our centres, our kaiako (teachers) recognise and respond to tamariki as individuals. We value their mana (self-esteem) and their sense of belonging. Kaiako also encourage tuākana / teina (older person/younger person) relationships. We teach social skills by supporting and guiding tamariki in their learning. We encourage them to be resilient, take risks, understand and express their emotions.

Creating global citizens

In order to succeed in our rapidly changing, and increasingly interconnected world, we teach our tamariki to become global citizens. Global citizenship is the idea that everyone, no matter where they live, is part of a worldwide community and they should respect other cultures and the environment and contribute to wider society. Our curriculum helps tamariki develop essential skills that will support their lifelong learning and promote respect for diversity such as:

  • problem-solving,
  • communication,
  • collaboration and
  • cross-cultural awareness.

Kauri Park Kindergarten

Kia ora and welcome to Kauri Park Kindergarten

We are situated in Birkdale and pride ourselves on our spacious and natural outdoor environment.

We are committed to providing an environment that supports inquiry and play based learning. We use learner identities as a lens to see each child’s individuality within a diverse community.

Our kindergartens have early childhood qualified and registered teachers.  The teachers are dedicated to, and passionate about, early childhood education.  Each kindergarten has a head teacher plus teachers and support staff.  Quality learning programmes are based on the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whãriki.

Our learning philosophy

For the past 110 years, the Auckland Kindergarten Association has been igniting young minds by encouraging them to explore their imaginations through play. For many of us, kindergarten was where we began our life of learning; it was where we started learning skills like sharing, tolerance, patience, respect and self-confidence.

We view children as capable, competent, life-long learners, and our philosophy encourages children to make their own learning choices, problem-solve and observe and explore at their own pace…with support from teachers, parents, wider whānau and their peers. We value the importance of child-initiated, play-based experiences. Our kindergarten teachers nurture your children’s interests and natural curiosity by working alongside them, expanding language and introducing mathematical and science concepts, as well as literacy, digital technology and sustainable practices.

Our centres have gardens and natural outdoor spaces where children can create, explore, be imaginative and expressive. There’s plenty of room to safely run about, being imaginative and physically active. In fact, the natural world is essential to free-range play. AKA encourages each kindergarten community to explore and enrich their diversity and uniqueness. Some have regular excursions into the local community; some are Enviroschool kindergartens that live and breathe sustainable practices; while others engage in long-term research on child interest-based programmes of learning.

As an organisation, we formally acknowledge the dual heritage of Aotearoa / New Zealand, and work to uphold the spirit and intent of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in each kindergarten. We are accessible, secular and welcoming to the wide diversity of tamariki and whānau who attend our centres, and value ongoing partnerships between teaching teams and leadership staff with families and whānau. We value ongoing learning for teachers, parents and whānau, and the sharing of knowledge, skills and attributes is fundamental to achieving the best learning outcomes for children. Teachers and staff can access collegial professional time to ensure that quality practice is enhanced so current theories of learning and development within New Zealand’s world-class Te Whāriki early childhood curriculum are shared and understood.

Children learn

Children in our kindergartens have the opportunity to:

  • Feel confident, develop responsibility and a sense of independence
  • Play meaningfully alongside other children and adults
  • Develop effective communication skills
  • Persevere, problem-solve and take risks
  • Explore limits, boundaries, routines and conflict resolution strategies
  • Practice fine motor skills such as threading, writing, cutting and grasping
  • Develop gross motor play such as physical games like climbing, throwing, kicking, balancing and lifting
  • Develop creative expressions through painting, music, collage, movement, dance, finger-painting, drawing, cutting, pasting and story sharing
  • Develop early numeracy, literacy and science skills
  • Learn techniques through trial and error
  • Explore the world through experimenting, questioning and curiosity
  • Develop confidence and celebrate both attempts and successes
  • Develop a passion for learning and a love of life
  • Have fun!

Older children will be supported in their transition to school to make this process as simple and seamless as possible. Book a visit here on Kindello today, we’d love to meet you.

Nurserydale Childcare is a loving, engaging, and welcoming place of learning for all ākonga (learners) - children, parents & teachers. Everyone is treated with respect, trust and compassion.  At Nurserydale we believe that it is only by providing a secure and emotionally satisfying base for children that their learning and imagination will flow.

Nurserydale Childcare acknowledges Te Tiriti o Waitangi as the founding document of Aotearoa/New Zealand.  It is the basis of our nation’s bicultural heritage and every child has the right to an education that helps them to develop an understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti and our dual heritage.

At Nurserydale we value and work within the NZ Early childhood curriculum framework -Te Whãriki, we recognise the right of each child to experience an empowering curriculum which will enhance their mana and supports them to enhance the mana of others.

We also take inspiration from the Pikler/RIE and Reggio Emilia philosophies and believe RESPECT, the rights of the child, and the strong relationships we build, are crucial in supporting our children to grow into competent and confident learners.  Hence, we provide peaceful and consistent ‘education and care' through key teacher relationships for children’s sense of security and well-being.

At Nurserydale we enable mixed aged learning, siblings are always supported to spend time together.  Our children are encouraged to learn alongside children older and younger than themselves and we have times set aside during the day for smaller group work.
