Muddy Toes Babies Early Learning Centre

Muddy Toes Babies provides a safe haven for our children, where they are cared and nurtured.  We provide quality care for children aged 3 months to two years old and our opening hours are from 8.00-5.00pm.  Our children are respected, understood and have an appreciation for the wider world. By blending the Pikler and RIE approaches, we are able to provide a centre that is built on respect; respect for each other as well as respect for the environment. We promote interactions where the children are actively participating in child-led learning daily, with a focus on all the senses and the natural world around us.

Our whānau come first and work in partnership within the centre, which enables us to build stronger and meaningful relationships.  In order to better know the children and support their learning and development; we have open lines of communication with our whānau enabling the teachers to be able to develop strong and robust relationships. These relationships are the foundation and help us to learn more about our children and their cultural heritage as an extension of what they learn at home.  This connectedness helps the children to feel safe and at “home”.

We recognise tangata whenua and that our unique bicultural heritage is founded in Te Tiriti o Waitangi with its principles of partnership, protection and participation.  Our children experience the languages, music, art and stories of the cultures and diversity of Aotearoa.  Cultural and other individual diversities are celebrated, planned for and valued within the routine experiences that the centre has to offer.

Children are encouraged to move freely, discovering their own bodies and how it moves.  Our children have time to explore nature and develop in their own time.  They are provided with open ended resources that stimulate their creativity, imagination and sense of wonder for the world around them. Through our explorations, we provide opportunities for our children to learn with and alongside their peers.

Our observations and engagements are unhurried and meaningful.  Therefore our teachers are able to form close relationships with each of the children.  Our interactions are thoughtful, intentional and aimed to support the interconnectedness that each child brings to the centre. We talk gently and respectfully, encouraging them to develop healthy language and social skills.  We take the time to set up beautiful play spaces each day to ensure the childrens needs are being met.  The strong relationships that our teachers have with each other help us to be able to provide a deep level of care.

We provide a nature based environment that promotes positive, calm, peaceful interactions and engagements.  Teachers allow the time and space for each child to develop their individual skills, interests and routines.  We embrace play through natural investigations through a range of activities which provide practical, hands-on experiences.  We foster a love and passion for the outdoors and the importance of taking care of the earth we live on. As the children grow, learn and explore the world around us, they will experience a “home away from home” which values all aspects of the living world.

Educare Warkworth

Educare Warkworth is located in the Grange Business Park off the main highway through Warkworth providing a central location and easy off-street parking.

Our purpose-built centre opened in June 2016 and is taking enrolments now. Please get in contact with us if you are interested in enrolling your children with us.

We pride ourselves on quality childcare with a strong emphasis on safety and nature within a whānau environment. We recognise the importance of providing care and education for children in their early years that encourages them to develop foundation life skills through "Learn, Laugh, Play".

Our values and philosophy

Educare Acknowledges and respects the rights of all children. We value children’s individuality, their special qualities, skills and attributes which contribute to a holistic learning environment enabling them to Learn, Laugh and Play.

Every child is unique and needs acceptance and respect to develop to their full potential. Each child is given time and space to progress and develop at his/her own natural pace.

All relationships, within Educare, are respectful. Relationships between teachers and children are especially respectful, with firm, fair and consistent boundaries that will provide a safe and nurturing environment for children to grow socially competent.

We believe that open communication between management, teachers and parents is essential as we work in partnership to provide quality care and education for all children.

Teachers display sensitivity, compassion and support to each other and the families who attend our centres. Educare actively supports their staff to continually grow, both personally and professionally.

Centre environments are regarded as ‘third teachers’ to evoke curiosity, and support learning through careful attention to aesthetics and creative spaces.

Our bicultural heritage of Aōtearoa New Zealand is recognised and naturally integrated within the centres, through Te reo (language) and tikanga (practice).  Additionally we appreciate and value our society as being increasingly multicultural and diverse.

Educare embraces Te Whāriki, (New Zealand’s National Early Childhood Curriculum) as our guiding document. It is the holistic approach of Te Whāriki that not only underpins planning and practice for children but also makes us reflect during the process of policy making and self review.

Our curriculum

Our desired outcomes for Educare children are:

  • Caring for themselves, others and the community – Participate as a member of a community
  • Cooperate with others – Celebrate accomplishments
  • Express many emotions – Love and be compassionate

Mahurangi Kindergarten

Welcome, Haere mai, Mauri to Mahurangi Kindergarten.

Mahurangi is the shortened version of the Maori phrase, ‘Mahu hu ki te rangi”, which translates to, “The rock that points to the sky.”

While literally referring to a landmark in the area, we have taken this meaning and made it into an inspiration for our kindergarten.

We are an Enviroschool – teaching children to be kaitiaki/caretakers of their world. Teaching and learning respect for our environment and each other.

Our kindergarten has a strong bond with whānau /families and our community which is semi-rural in the town of Warkworth.  We are within walking distance to our local Warkworth Primary School which helps with our transition to school programme.

Our Purpose

To provide effective early childhood education services to ensure every child leaves kindergarten with the foundations of personal development and a love of life and learning

Your Child, Your Place

At our centres your child will learn:

  • How to relate to other children and their teachers
  • How to take responsibility, develop independence and self-confidence
  • How to share and explore their understanding of people, places and things
  • How to express ideas and acknowledge feelings
  • Negotiating, turn taking, cooperation and conflict resolution
  • Respect for other cultures, languages and traditions
  • How to better interact with family and the wider community
  • Hauora (the four dimensions of health), physical, mental, social and spiritual health
  • Sustainability and the natural environment

Our History

Kaitiaki Kindergartens were originally known as the East Coast Bays Free Kindergarten Association. Torbay was the association’s first kindergarten which opened in 1954 and it is still a very active kindergarten to this day. As we grew we became known as the Northern Auckland Free Kindergarten Association. Today, we go by the name of ‘Kaitiaki Kindergartens’. Kaitiaki means, “a guardian or trustee, typically of an environmental area or resource.” This change reflects our responsibility to each and every child, community member and kindergarten in the Kaitiaki wider family.

We’re about:

  • children, families and whanau
  • quality early childhood education
  • a qualified and registered workforce
  • community
  • not-for-profit
  • home grown
  • kiwi owned

Kindergarten is a partnership between:

Teachers

Qualified, registered teachers provide and deliver educational programmes under the guidance and support of the Professional Practice Leaders.

Our communities

Support teachers and the Association to help raise funds to ensure it has the resources required by the teachers and staff and to build community relationships.

Board of management

Elected by the community by members (parents/whanau) to govern the Association. The board sets policies and the strategic direction of the Association and appoints the General Manager to manage the Association on their behalf.

Our learning philosophy

For the past 110 years, the Auckland Kindergarten Association has been igniting young minds by encouraging them to explore their imaginations through play. For many of us, kindergarten was where we began our life of learning; it was where we started learning skills like sharing, tolerance, patience, respect and self-confidence.

We view children as capable, competent, life-long learners, and our philosophy encourages children to make their own learning choices, problem-solve and observe and explore at their own pace…with support from teachers, parents, wider whānau and their peers. We value the importance of child-initiated, play-based experiences. Our kindergarten teachers nurture your children’s interests and natural curiosity by working alongside them, expanding language and introducing mathematical and science concepts, as well as literacy, digital technology and sustainable practices.

Our centres have gardens and natural outdoor spaces where children can create, explore, be imaginative and expressive. There’s plenty of room to safely run about, being imaginative and physically active. In fact, the natural world is essential to free-range play. AKA encourages each kindergarten community to explore and enrich their diversity and uniqueness. Some have regular excursions into the local community; some are Enviroschool kindergartens that live and breathe sustainable practices; while others engage in long-term research on child interest-based programmes of learning.

As an organisation, we formally acknowledge the dual heritage of Aotearoa / New Zealand, and work to uphold the spirit and intent of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in each kindergarten. We are accessible, secular and welcoming to the wide diversity of tamariki and whānau who attend our centres, and value ongoing partnerships between teaching teams and leadership staff with families and whānau. We value ongoing learning for teachers, parents and whānau, and the sharing of knowledge, skills and attributes is fundamental to achieving the best learning outcomes for children. Teachers and staff can access collegial professional time to ensure that quality practice is enhanced so current theories of learning and development within New Zealand’s world-class Te Whāriki early childhood curriculum are shared and understood.

Children learn

Children in our kindergartens have the opportunity to:

  • Feel confident, develop responsibility and a sense of independence
  • Play meaningfully alongside other children and adults
  • Develop effective communication skills
  • Persevere, problem-solve and take risks
  • Explore limits, boundaries, routines and conflict resolution strategies
  • Practice fine motor skills such as threading, writing, cutting and grasping
  • Develop gross motor play such as physical games like climbing, throwing, kicking, balancing and lifting
  • Develop creative expressions through painting, music, collage, movement, dance, finger-painting, drawing, cutting, pasting and story sharing
  • Develop early numeracy, literacy and science skills
  • Learn techniques through trial and error
  • Explore the world through experimenting, questioning and curiosity
  • Develop confidence and celebrate both attempts and successes
  • Develop a passion for learning and a love of life

Snells Beach is home to our established and peaceful Mahurangi preschool. With extensive outdoor spaces both upstairs (for 1-3 year olds) and downstairs (for 3-6 year olds) stimulating imaginative play and learning, the centre is spacious and ideal for all ages.

Our excellent, experienced teaching teams will be ready to welcome you to our Snells Beach Centre at any time. The indoor to outdoor flow at the centre is ideal for children with an extensive range of areas available for play activities from baking, to painting, woodwork, games and reading.

Children should learn at their own pace and with plenty of free play, so our teachers engage the children on their level – observing, noticing, recognising and responding to what the child is doing.

The structure of the day is organised in such a way as to maximise a variety of learning experiences and to support individual styles of learning.

Each day we have a time together on the mat where stories and songs are shared, and at the end of the day music and phonics. Each mat time is highly interactive and creates a platform for relevant activities to follow.

We provide a high level of flexibility and options available for families. Choose your session times, take children out of preschool for the school holidays with no charge, and we allow for two makeup sessions per term.

Matakana Playcentre

Nau mai, haere mai and welcome to Matakana Playcentre

Playcentre is unlike any other early childhood education organisation. At Playcentre, both children and their parents / caregivers attend.

At Playcentre children get the opportunity to learn and explore in a fun and safe environment.

The curiosity and creativity of our tamariki is nurtured in a way that allows them to learn about themselves and their world.

Your child will be given a chance to explore, create, climb, read, sing, experiment, play music, wear costumes, have their face painted (or do it themselves!), garden, do carpentry with real tools, bake and cook, build sandcastles, swing, slide, dance, spend time in nature and get messy.

The activities change every day. Playcentre parents all bring different skills, interests, and cultural backgrounds to add to the rich learning environment.

We welcome families with children aged 0 – 6 years. Mixed age play allows your children to engage with others older and younger than themselves. Pre-schoolers learn how to communicate, share and negotiate with empathy for their younger peers.

At Playcentre, families come together and lifelong friendships are formed.

We welcome you to visit any time during the year. You are entitled to three free visits so come and check out what we do – we would love to meet you and your family!

Totara Hill Montessori

Founded in 2005, Totara Hill is situated four kilometres from the centre of Matakana Village. Its beautiful landscaping blends the preschool into a peaceful, rural setting, which puts the children in contact with nature.

Tia Wooller is the preschool's owner and senior teacher.  Tia draws on more than 30 years of her own Montessori teaching experience to create the classroom's daily working environment.  She also oversees the preschool's administration.

Having established three centers during her career, her dream with Totara Hill has been to establish a small preschool that embraces the ideals of a quality education, with families from the community which fosters a feeling of belonging, thereby creating quality relationships.

High parental commitment means that the philosophy is encouraged at home too and parents have regular opportunities to attend information evenings where they can learn more about their child's journey.

Having a rural property gives the children the opportunity to be away from busyness and absorbed in nature. Long walks and days on the backfield are an integral part of the program.

Muddy Toes ELC Warkworth

We established Muddy Toes Early Learning Centre to provide a warm, natural, safe and welcoming environment. Our centre is a small family run business which has been created with the help of our passionate Kaiako. We practice a forest-based philosophy.

We will provide a loving, nurturing and stimulating environment which will enable children to feel a sense of belonging, whilst they engage in meaningful play opportunities. Our centre is designed for play; we welcome “muddy play” and provide a natural environment for our tamariki to explore. We will provide a loving, nurturing and stimulating environment which will enable children to feel a sense of belonging, whilst they engage in meaningful play opportunities.

Our centre is designed for play; we welcome “muddy play” and provide a natural environment for our tamariki to explore. We embrace Tangaroa, Papatunuku, Ranginui, Tawhirimatea and Tāne god of the forest.

M.U.D represents the core meaning behind our philosophy “make unique discoveries”. Our tamariki can make unique discoveries in our very own back yard, amongst nature.

We embrace the beautiful philosophical influences of Reggio Emillia and Montessori. Our overall learning objective is to let children lead us into a world of discovery. We encourage children to follow their own interests and take ownership of their learning.

This freedom of choice promotes self-esteem and encourages children to become capable, confident and independent learners. We encourage a love for learning and education.

In our view this means fun, laughter and love. We let your children lead the way and respond by extending on from each individual interest.

Relationships are our key to success! We base everything we do in the centre on respect; respect for ourselves, respect for others and respect for the environment.

Oak Tree The Early Childhood Learning Centre

Welcome to Oak Tree The Early Childhood Learning Centre

We welcome you and your child to what we trust will be an extension of your home. By working together we will provide an environment that promotes quality care and education.

We are licensed by the Ministry of Education for 25 children aged two to five years.

We hope you and your family enjoy your time at Oak Tree.

Our Philosophy

The staff and Management at The Oak Tree believe that relationships form the key to the education that occurs in our centre.

We offer a homely friendly environment and encourage our families to be involved in our programme. We acknowledge that children contribute to their own learning through the relationships they form and the experiences they have. We provide a safe, warm and caring environment where children want to learn.

We value the reciprocal relationships that we have with parents. By teachers documenting the children’s work in a respectful way, we allow children to revisit their learning and help inform parents of the learning that has occurred.

Adults respect the children as confident competent learners and communicators. We encourage each child to reach their full potential by providing a stimulating and interesting environment that allows children to explore and engage in experiences that they plan and carry out.

Children learn best when they engage in experiences that they are interested in and by providing a flexible programme that builds on children’s knowledge we believe we provide a quality service to the families of Warkworth.

Values and Goals

  • To value and respect each child as an individual.
  • To extend and develop each child’s skills, knowledge, and interests through successful experiences which encourage the development of a healthy self-concept and positive self-esteem.
  • To encourage social development so each child learns to interact successfully in a variety of situations.
  • To be sensitive and respectful of varied cultural practices.
  • To provide an environment that encourages children to develop their capabilities and interests at their own pace and according to their individual needs.
  • To provide a warm, nurturing, and safe environment that encourages the development of the whole child.
  • To be a support to all families in all aspects of each child’s development.
  • To ensure that communication will be a two-way process, which recognizes parents as the primary caregivers.
  • To provide qualified experienced and caring staff to meet the needs of the individual child.

Sandcastles Matakana

Mother-and-daughter team Carol Mills and Kylie Steffener opened Sandcastles Early Childhood Centre in January 2013.

Carol had worked for many years in the early childhood sector and Kylie was a primary school teacher. Together, they developed a plan to create their own centre in the Snells Beach community. Choosing to relocate and redecorate a bungalow, Carol’s and Kylie’s vision was to create a true ‘home away from home’ for young children – a friendly and inviting space.

‘If we could all see the world through the eyes of a child, we would see the magic in everything’

Sandcastles provides stimulating, age-appropriate areas for under 2s and over 2s, including a children’s kitchen and ‘building site’ for the older children. For restful moments, there is a story time space and separate sleep room. The large outdoor area, complete with interchangeable playground, encourages children to explore and develop their physical skills. We value the importance of allowing children to wonder, dream and to just be!

We understand that it is an important event when your child moves from preschool to school and this is reflected in the curriculum within our transition to school programme.
