Annabel's Educare - Somerfield

We believe in providing quality early childhood education to our children and their whanau. Our teaching philosophies and commitment from the Annabel's team are what makes early learning at Annabel’s different from the rest.

Annabel’s Somerfield ensures your child's development by focusing on their strengths in the present so they can succeed in the future. We take pride in the learning environment that we offer our children at our preschool as it gives them limitless opportunities to develop into their full potential.

Our Somerfield preschool is fortunate enough to have 2 newly purpose-built centres with large, open and light spaces, making for a very enjoyable learning environment. We have 3 age-specific classrooms that cater to children 3-5 years old, including a nursery for children 3 months old - 2 years old. Our preschool outdoor space includes a developing garden area where children can explore, discover and experiment in a safe environment.

Why Our Somerfield Preschool:

The teachers at our Somerfield preschool are all fully qualified with years of experience and first aid training. Our fantastic ratios that are well below the Ministry of Education requirements mean that each child is in the best hands to fully develop their skills and knowledge. At our Somerfield preschool, we’ve developed a 5 essential areas programme to assist children with getting ready for school, the next step in their learning journey.

Our Close Community:

Our favourite part of our Somerfield preschool community is our centre pets, that are now a strong piece of our Annabel’s family. Our kindergarten has great connections with the local primary schools, libraries and rest homes and our children love our monthly excursions out to visit each of these. Our excursions are a part of the preschool curriculum which gives our children a fun adventure to look forward to each month.

Somerfield Community Playcentre

Nestled in the leafy suburb of Somerfield, Somerfield Playcentre has been moulded and loved by the inquisitive, messy and playful hands of hundreds of children over the years. Allow your children’s curious fingers to join the tapestry of learning here at Somerfield Playcentre.

Our indoor space is open and welcoming with engaging play resources for all ages. You will find children sitting quietly in the reading corner, making lavish picnics and putting babies to bed in the family corner, and experimenting with colour and texture in the arts and crafts area.

Our outdoor space has something for everyone with room to run free as well as enclosed leafy areas, excellent for hiding and seeking or quiet play. Sweet smelling herbs, flower petals and leafy plants are perfect for potion making and developing one’s culinary skills in the mud kitchen. We also grow real food that we enjoy using in our shared kai. Our large sandpit is well equipped for digging, building, experimenting, creating animal habitats … you name it, our sand pit can accommodate it. We also have slides, swings, a jungle gym and a garage, filled to bursting with equipment for biking, bouncing, balancing, driving, kicking, swinging, climbing  and so on. We are only limited by our imaginations.

We are passionate about playing and about the community of families who have made Somerfield Playcentre the ECE for their children. Come and see for yourselves … and do wear your messy clothes. You never know what kind of play you’ll be swept up in when you walk through the door.

Courtyard Montessori Preschool

At the Courtyard Montessori Preschool we support Maria Montessori’s teaching on the importance of a mixed age range of children in our two 3-6 year old classrooms.  Children of these ages and stages of development can work side by side in the environment.

Our 2-3 year old classroom is a lovely calm and nurturing class, where children first develop their sense of well-being and belonging outside the home environment and away from family. The children here begin to develop a level of independence, caring for themselves through self-help skills they are introduced to. At the same time they begin to develop a greater awareness of how to interact with peers and teachers.  Children in all classes are free to progress at their own individual rhythm and pace within our non-competitive environment, while values and respect for others is at the heart of our preschool and modelled in our daily Grace and Courtesy lessons that are practiced in informal group situations.

A unique cycle of learning

Our Montessori approach is distinctive in so far as it provides a unique cycle of learning designed to take advantage of the child’s sensitive years when a child can absorb information from our enriched environment.  Our environment and programme takes advantage of this fact by allowing the child the freedom to select individual activities, which correspond to their own periods of interest and exploration.

Our environment is designed to put the child at ease by giving them freedom within an environment prepared with attractive Montessori materials within curriculum areas of Practical Life, Sensorial, Maths, Language, Environmental and Art.  Within any of these areas there are activities that vary from simple to complex so that each child can choose and work with activities in any area that fulfill their current interest and curiosity.
