In our space, we prioritise our tamariki and their sense of belonging. Our rooms are designed to foster loving and trusting bonds between our infants and toddlers and their kaiako. Our kaiako work closely with whānau to establish excellent routines that support each tamati and ensure their individual needs are met. We strive to create a safe and nurturing environment where relationships are at the core of everything we do. Our tamariki are provided with open-ended resources that encourage them to explore, experiment, and develop their own ideas and create theories about the world around them. We also encourage our tamariki to take risks and challenge themselves, with the support of our kaiako.

We also proudly operate our own Busy Bees centre van, allowing us to help support our centre whānau who require assistance with transport to and from the centre. Our child-led curriculum empowers tamariki to gain knowledge through play, participation and positive guidance to learn and grow in a safe, family-supported environment. At Kerikeri Playcentre we celebrate uniqueness and diversity and encourage children to develop a range of strategies and skills to learn and play with others.

At our centre, parents bring different skills, interests, and cultural backgrounds to add to the rich learning environment. It’s where families come together and lifelong friendships are formed.

Your child will have the freedom to explore and create in a space that supports parents as the first and most valuable educators of their tamariki. We provide a unique early childhood experience where children, parents and families learn together, and we offer free education to assist you on your parenting journey.

Kerikeri Playcentre is open during school terms on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8.45am to 12.45pm for newborns through to 6 year olds. On Friday we also offer a drop-off session with a qualified facilitator designed for tamariki aged 3 years and over.

Te Kōhanga Reo

The kōhanga reo movement is a unique initiative based on total immersion in Māori language and values with the aim of passing on Māori culture to future generations.

Kōhanga reo emphasise the revitalisation of the culture through te reo Māori and are dependent on the active participation of the whole whānau. The kaupapa of kōhanga reo aims to strengthen whānau capabilities in cultural, social, economic, spiritual and political matters. Education, health and wellbeing are inherent within all aspects of the kaupapa. The prime focus is the whānau – its collective development, growth, accountability and wellbeing set within a Māori cultural context.

Kōhanga reo do not regard tamariki in isolation, but as important members of the whānau. The kōhanga reo philosophy is that tamariki will benefit when whānau successfully operate according to the kaupapa. Tamariki are an integral part of whānau development.

The following key goals are the foundation of te kōhanga reo kaupapa established in 1982:

  • total immersion in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga in daily operations
  • whānau decision-making, management and responsibility
  • accountability
  • health and wellbeing of mokopuna and whānau.

The key goals of te kōhanga reo assure that there will be:

  • security in te reo Māori
  • a supportive, caring environment for mokopuna
  • whānau (collective) sharing of responsibilities, knowledge and expertise

Our Philosophy

Relationships are the foundation of our philosophy and teaching practices at Inspiring Minds. Children are seen as capable and competent learners, researchers, artists and inventors. No child is the same therefore each child is valued and respected as an individual, within the context of their family/whanau and culture.

The environment we wish to create is one that feels like a home away from home. A positive place where children feel they belong, and where parents know their child is valued and respected as an individual and that their wellbeing is at the forefront of teaching practices.

We believe that children deserve the kind of respect that adults expect from one another. This means the child is at the centre of all interactions, routines, and teaching practices. Every child is treated with respect, they are active participants in care routines, and they know they have a place here. We strive to make learning visible so children, parents, whanau and visitors can see that their child’s contribution is valued and that children really are the centre of our philosophy.

We endeavour to provide an environment that provokes creativity, encourages children to think and wonder, challenges capabilities, and expands a child’s knowledge and understanding across a wide range of experiences. The Kaupapa/ Philosophy at Nurture by Nature encompasses several overlapping concepts.

Rooms

The Kowhai Learning Space

This is where the youngest children in the centre spend their day.  The routines and rhythms of the room are very much a reflection of the children in the room at any one time.  We are committed to building close relationships with children's parents and whanau and providing a warm and welcoming environment where routines are as close as possible to those that children experience in their homes.

Resources are rotated and reflect the interests and cultures of the children in the Kowhai Room.

The Pohutukawa Learning Space

The Pohutukawa Learning Space is where the toddlers and young children spend their day.  The curriculum is child centred and developed around the interests of the children in the room, and supported with resources that are appropriate for the ages of the children and encourage inquiry based learning.

The Kauri Learning Space

This is the learning space where the older children share adventures, learn through self-lead play and foster their curiosity and resilience as citizens of tomorrow.  They lead their learning through the expression of their multiple languages of learning, as they co-construct their applied understanding and development alongside the professional teaching team.
