Busy Bees Mangakakahi

Our Environment

Busy Bees Mangakakahi offers a safe and fun learning environment for your tamariki, providing a place of belonging for children to learn, develop and grow through social interaction in an engaging environment.  Indoor and outdoor play spaces are carefully set up by kaiako, with lots of opportunities to explore and learn.

Our centre offers wonderful, safe and fun outdoor spaces where children are provided with a range of diverse resources, including natural gardens and environment visuals, whilst enjoying the fresh air.

Our team is made up of passionate and experienced teachers who are warm, welcoming and naturally caring people.  We see all children as individuals, valuing each unique stage of life, show them respect for who they are and providing equal opportunities to ensure the best possible start in life.

Intentional activities and provocations are set up daily throughout the centre, providing calming and inviting spaces, where you'll often hear children, whānau and kaiako engaging in meaningful conversations.

Van & Excursions

We proudly operate our own Busy Bees centre van, allowing us to help support both new and existing families who require assistance with transport to and from the centre. We also utilise this awesome resource for excursions out and about in our local community!

Our children also enjoy walks where they can get out and explore locally. We are fortunate the centre is a short walk from the local park and Western Heights Primary School. Other places our kaiako and children love to visit include MIGs Gymnastics and the Redwoods. We often have our local community join us in Centre for visits and enhance our children’s knowledge about people, places, things and events.

Curriculum

Our curriculum reflects our philosophy for strong relationships. We absolutely love coming together with our tamariki, whānau and community to strengthen our connection with one another. At Busy Bees Mangakakahi, we love to celebrate different cultures and events, which provide boundless learning for tamariki and an appreciation of different cultures and traditions.

Our core programme at mat times focuses on shapes, colours, letters and numbers, and are integrated throughout each week.  We often see tuakana-teina relationships at play, with the older children encouraging and helping the younger ones, leading to many heart-warming learning moments.

Believe in Yourself

Mauria te Pono

Positive, strong and trusting relationships between parents/whanau, children and staff are essential for ensuring we get the best outcomes for our children. We are committed to nurturing a strong sense of ownership and belonging for all our children and their families. When children have a sense of belonging they develop their confidence to try new things. They believe in themselves.

At BestStart Sunset our baby, toddler and preschool spaces are home-like environments with large inviting outdoor areas. These provide our children the choice to freely explore their own interests, make decisions, problem-solve, develop relationships and learn at their own pace with support from experienced and qualified teachers.

Our names of our three room represent the lifecycle of a butterfly. We link this journey to the journey of our tamariki as they transition through three rooms.

Anuhe (Infants) - This means caterpillar and represents the learning and development of our infants as they explore and engage in the early learning of movement, safety/trust, independence, taking early risks and communication supported in celebrating their individual success and pace of learning and development.

Raukatauri (Toddlers) - This can mean cacoon, we link this to the room being a cacoon of learning, rich experiences preparing toddlers for their journey towards the Preschool Room, developing language, independence, problem-solving, social skills and self-help care and skills an d taking risks.

Purerehua (Preschoolers) - This translates to butterfly, and reflects the journey that a butterfly has recognising the journey they have been on and supporting the journey ahead as they prepare their wings for flight in to the wider world. Developing further skills for being school ready, independence, creative thinking, total well-being, risk taking, relationships, reasoning and thinking.

All our rooms practice, support, reflect, acknowledging the values that are important to us such as aroha, manaaki, whanaungatanga, tuakana and teina relationships, ako, and Te Whare Tapa Wha. These concepts and values make up the frames of our days as we act, respond, learn and grow together.

We celebrate success through promoting a can-do attitude, a give it a go environment with kaiako ready to give a hand, support, and most of all empower.

Community connections - The community plays an integral part of our early childhood centre and curriculum at BestStart Sunset. We engage in regular excursions into our community; enjoying trips to the library, fortnightly visits to our local rest home where we implement a play-based programme for the residents alongside our children to encourage diversity in relationship building and support developing social competency. We have Matua Grant visit each Wednesday morning along with his guitar to teach us new waiata and further support our tamariki in their use of Te Reo.

Health and wellbeing - At BestStart Sunset we are committed to being a centre where nutrition and physical activity are paramount in our day to day routines. We have a dedicated centre cook who provides our tamariki with nutritious morning, lunch and afternoon kai. We have lunch box days each Friday, to offer our pre-schoolers the opportunity to prepare for school. We are also a Breastfeeding Friendly Accredited centre.

The kōhanga reo movement is a unique initiative based on total immersion in Māori language and values with the aim of passing on Māori culture to future generations.

Kōhanga reo emphasise the revitalisation of the culture through te reo Māori and are dependent on the active participation of the whole whānau. The kaupapa of kōhanga reo aims to strengthen whānau capabilities in cultural, social, economic, spiritual and political matters. Education, health and wellbeing are inherent within all aspects of the kaupapa. The prime focus is the whānau – its collective development, growth, accountability and wellbeing set within a Māori cultural context.

The following key goals are the foundation of te kōhanga reo kaupapa established in 1982:

  • total immersion in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga in daily operations
  • whānau decision-making, management and responsibility
  • accountability
  • health and wellbeing of mokopuna and whānau.

The key goals of te kōhanga reo assure that there will be:

  • security in te reo Māori
  • a supportive, caring environment for mokopuna
  • whānau (collective) sharing of responsibilities, knowledge and expertise
  • greater respect and appreciation of each other.
