New Shoots Childcare Centre, The Lakes, Tauranga

Catering to Tauranga’s ever-growing community at The Lakes, children feel at home the minute they enter New Shoots. Down the road from the local school, and with many parks and walking trails on our doorstep, our early childhood centre is the perfect choice for the many young families at The Lakes.

Winner of the 2020 Waikato / Bay of Plenty Architectural Awards, our purpose-built centre boasts high ceilings, exposed timber beams and a translucent roof strip. Within our walls, the rooms are filled with custom-made child-friendly furniture, a lush, earthy aesthetic and plenty of stunning Tauranga sunlight.

With lots of greenery, two sandpits, and a generous covered deck, our outside area lets children connect with nature, explore their boundaries and hone their creativity. The outdoors is shared by all our tamariki, cementing our centre’s family-feel. Nobody is a stranger and children float naturally between teachers and spaces as they might with a large, extended family.

At New Shoots The Lakes, we focus on a curriculum of care, kindness and respect. Relationships are at the heart of everything we do and our amazing kaiako provide every child with a warm, nurturing environment.

We are proud to be a part of the welcoming, family-filled community that is The Lakes. If you are looking for an early childhood centre, pop in for a visit and discover what makes New Shoots so special.

Philosophy

Embedded deeply within our teaching practice is a strong influence on respectful practice between parents, teachers and children. We strongly value relationships and strive to build these with each family member. We recognize children’s families as their first teachers. Building strong relationships allows authentic opportunities to know children’s passions, interests and strengths more deeply, therefore allowing us to respond to them and enhance learning outcomes for each individual child.

We are committed to best practice and have a shared passion and value for play-based learning. We provide engaging environments based on children’s interests and have a strong focus on learning dispositions – this allows children plenty of uninterrupted time to explore, inquire, think and learn.

We encourage the involvement of parents and whanau within our centre and embrace our whole school campus as our learning environment, community and family.

The principles of Te Whariki, The NZ Early Childhood Curriculum are at the core of our teaching practice: Empowerment, Holistic Development, Family and Community and Relationships

Growing our Future!

The seeds we plant today will become the forests of tomorrow! He kakano I tēnei rā, He ngahere āpōpō!

The ultimate gift we can give our world is to nurture our children's unique attributes; Empowering them to go forth in life with knowledge, creativity, self-confidence and instilling within them values of tolerance, compassion, curiosity, respect and a love for the natural world.

Our Curriculum

Empowerment: At BestStart Pyes Pa we believe that all children are precious individuals who have an important voice! Our children are acknowledged as reflective thinkers, explorers who are capable of making sound decisions with regards to their own learning. It is important that our children feel a sense of empowerment, that they know they are special, unique, capable and competent learners.

Relationships: The concepts of whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, and aroha are at the heart of our centre!  We believe that positive, strong and trusting relationships between parents/whanau, children and staff are essential components in ensuring the best possible outcomes for our children.

Culture: We value your culture! Our centre is respectful of individual cultures and all things cultural are affirmed and celebrated here.  We aim to support our children in growing strong roots, gaining a positive awareness of their own culture and develop a respect for the culture of others.

Nga Tamariki Taiao – Nature Kids: As teachers we are committed to giving your child real life, authentic natural experiences that will support their development and learning in a beautiful, natural and exciting environment. Through our Nga Tamariki Taiao – Nature kids programme, our older children enjoy regular visits to our local forest where they can fully engage in nature based learning.

Be School Ready: Our unique Be School Ready initiative has been carefully developed to ensure that our children leave the centre with all the important and necessary skills in which to confidently embrace and thrive in the next step of their learning journey.

Our Community: A forest never consists of a single tree! We believe that it is important for our children to understand what it means to be a responsible, respectful and collaborative member of a group/community/society.  We have worked hard to build solid, trusting relationships in our community with regular visits within our shopping complex, Althorp Retirement Village, local schools and local excursions.

Extra-curricular activities: We are excited to offer a range of extra-curricular activities; Swimming lessons, Rugby Tots and dance classes, all further supporting our engagement within the Hauora initiative, nurturing healthy, active children.

Individual learning: We believe that all children are unique and learn/develop at their own pace. Therefore our individual learning plans are specifically designed to support your child’s individual needs.

  • 18,000 families use BestStart services annually.
  • We have over 270 centres nationwide located from Whangarei to Invercargill.

Creating Lifelong Learners

Tamariki natural curiosity is the foundation for exploration and growth. They explore to make sense of the world, develop and have fun. Tamariki start their lives by exploring the world around them. They learn through everything they see, touch, hear, smell, taste and do.

Through play, nga tamariki engage in active learning and exploration. They learn more about their interests and about the world. Most importantly, they learn how to adapt to a changing world. Play helps us remain creative and provokes our imagination.

Our People

Our team at Kids at Home is a dedicated team of individuals who have been chosen for their commitment to provide quality, educational in-home childcare. Kids at Home’s management team also consists of experienced Early childhood professionals and others who have worked within other roles in ECE for many years. We are proud of our positive workplace culture which can be felt as soon as you walk through our office doors!

Playgroups

Playgroup provides your child with a rich learning setting that encourages your child to build a foundation for future learning. Our groups provide your child with the opportunity to mix and make lifelong friends with other tamariki

Music Groups

Music groups provide your child the opportunity to participate in singing, dancing and experiment with musical instruments.

Music is an important part of any child care program. Listening to music, singing, playing musical instruments, and moving to music are all activities that support tamariki development.

Outings and Excursions

Visiting Teachers plan trips to events or places of interest in the community such as fire stations, the zoo, museum, parks etc. (Whanau and friends are welcome to attend).

High Standard of Care

Our Teachers and Educators pride themselves on the quality of care and education each child receives.

We do not limit ourselves to one teaching method or philosophy because we understand that your child is unique. We believe that each child has their own learning style and personality.

Kids at Home’s Visiting Teachers are fully qualified and certificated ECE Teachers with a current practicing certificate from the Teaching Council; our handpicked Teachers have many years of experience and expertise between them.

Kids at Home’s Visiting Teachers support Educators with regular visits and planning for education and development of tamariki.

Country Kids Pre-School

Country Kids Pre-School is set in an idyllic country setting, where children have the opportunity to interact with a range of small farm animals, from feeding the lambs or pigs, collecting eggs from the chooks, cuddling the rabbits or playing with Pippa the pre-school dog. Children have the opportunity to help take care of the vege garden and small orchard and enjoy a range of fresh fruit and vegetables. Children are free to enjoy and discover the natural environment and taught ways to preserve and protect it.

We aim to provide stimulating equipment and a physical environment that encourages children to explore and discover, enquire, research, problem solve and have fun as they grow and develop physically, mentaly, socially, emotionally and spiritually.

Our new centre is purpose built to create an efficient learning environment that is homely, nurturing and stimulating.

Our small group sizes and high teacher:child ratio foster a peaceful and relaxed setting and allow for close and supportive relationships which we believe is important for children’s health and wellbeing.

Christian values and virtues are important to us so will be modeled and encouraged. Our goal is for children to develop independence, confidence and a love of learning.
