Small Group Setting

Our Home Based childcare groups are capped at a maximum of four children under the age of six, including Educators’ own children. This means we can offer each child the individual attention they need to flourish.

Home away from home experience

At a time when many early childhood operators are building larger centres, we’re going the other way. We have built a new centre for a smaller number of children maintaining a focus on quality care for a roll of 10 under two’s and 20 over two’s.

Our centre and facilities are purpose built

Right down to controlled temperature, solar power, woollen insulation, mercury free lighting. Small Wonders has been architecturally designed to create a very stable and safe child care environment.

Hands on owner managed centre

Small Wonders is owned by Peter Williams & Helen Novak. In the past Peter has owned a number of ECE Services and Helen was involved in Home Based Services. Peter & Helen are passionate about providing a high quality childcare offering to our local community.

We practice sustainable design

Small Wonders is environmentally friendly and “Going Green” will be a key focus in the everyday activity in the Centre involving the children.

Our educators are passionate and committed to supporting families in their early learning childhood journey. And our centre is custom built to enable them.

Well positioned centre

We’re located on a quiet street close to Raumati Beach Village and other amenities such as the beach, and Raumati Gardens.

We’re close to the local Primary School (Raumati Beach School) which is an advantage when children are transitioning and for families with children of different ages; there is also another primary school in Raumati South which is approximately 3km away.

We are also in easy walking distance to Kapiti College and the new Performing Arts Centre.

There is great access to public transport with a bus stop directly outside the centre – buses travel from the Paraparaumu Railway Station to Raumati Beach shops every 20 to 30 minutes in peak hours and hourly at other times.

Within the centre

We have crafted a perfect environment for early childhood learning. The building has been designed to maximise indoor outdoor flow . The building itself is powered by solar energy making the centre self-sufficient in electricity. We use double glazing, woollen insulation.

Every health and safety precaution has been designed into our centre. We have easy to clean and fire retardant surfaces, lead-free paints, mercury free fluorescent lighting and low energy usage for all our electronic equipment and appliances.

Attendance varies between the ages with 3 year olds attend a minimum of 3 days/week, 4 year olds attending a minimum of 4 days/week and 5 and 6 year olds attending 5 days/week.

Our programme is based on the recognition that rhythm provides support and security for the child. Therefore, we offer a daily rhythm that finds balance between child-led play and learning and times of togetherness with circle times, story telling, kai times and daily activities. The daily and weekly rhythm is part of a larger seasonal one which includes the celebration of festivals.  Children experience the richness of Te Ao Māori and other cultures and languages through the different stories told and songs sung.

At Te Rāwhiti, we aim to protect the wonder of childhood and foster the child’s inner imaginative qualities by offering plenty of time for child-led play. Natural, open ended and simple play resources are offered which nurture this imagination, the senses and aim not to overstimulate the child. The more possibili­ties there are for using imagination in play during childhood, the more the attributes of creativity and flexibility will be carried into adulthood. During the Kindergarten years, children are not asked to give their energies to understanding abstract ideas and intellectual concepts. There is no formal teaching in writing, reading and mathematics.

Daily activities focus on “doing” experiences which nurture the child’s developing Will, such as artistic activities, gardening and bread making. Throughout the day, the Kindergarten teacher is involved in real life tasks with and alongside the children. Teachers also strive to be worthy of imitation in order to nurture in children true feelings of reverence and gratitude for themselves, one another and the earth.

The Kindergarten is open to every child whose parents support the Waldorf approach we provide. Every family’s spiritual and cultural background is respected.

Raumati South Kindergarten

Raumati South Kindergarten is located on the Kapiti Coast, and was established over 50 years ago.    

Our focus is on supporting children and families in the important transitions between home, kindergarten and school. We provide education and care to children aged 2 -5 years in a motivating, friendly, interactive learning environment. The setting of the kindergarten provides a wonderful indoor/outdoor flow, with a large playground and spacious gardens that provide social and learning opportunities for children, whanau and teachers.     

Raumati South Kindergarten is an Enviroschools Kindergarten with the vision of ‘nurturing growth & enriching minds’ through partnerships in the immediate and wider community. One of our focus areas is environmental practices, and we learn about the world around us and our place within it.     Current programmes offered at kindergarten include Pre Entry Group, Kapa Haka, Transition to School,Gardening Group, Parent Workshops.  

Our teaching team consists of five qualified and registered teachers with some teachers also having post graduate qualifications.  All teachers embrace professional development opportunities to remain current and well informed. We are passionate about serving our community to a high standard.     Participation from whanau is encouraged, including sharing skills, celebrating occasions or just spending time with us.

Te Kōhanga Reo o Tararua ki Paraparaumu

Te Kōhanga Reo

The kōhanga reo movement is a unique initiative based on total immersion in Māori language and values with the aim of passing on Māori culture to future generations.

Kōhanga reo emphasise the revitalisation of the culture through te reo Māori and are dependent on the active participation of the whole whānau. The kaupapa of kōhanga reo aims to strengthen whānau capabilities in cultural, social, economic, spiritual and political matters. Education, health and wellbeing are inherent within all aspects of the kaupapa. The prime focus is the whānau – its collective development, growth, accountability and wellbeing set within a Māori cultural context.

Kōhanga reo do not regard tamariki in isolation, but as important members of the whānau. The kōhanga reo philosophy is that tamariki will benefit when whānau successfully operate according to the kaupapa. Tamariki are an integral part of whānau development.

The following key goals are the foundation of te kōhanga reo kaupapa established in 1982:

  • total immersion in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga in daily operations
  • whānau decision-making, management and responsibility
  • accountability
  • health and wellbeing of mokopuna and whānau.

The key goals of te kōhanga reo assure that there will be:

  • security in te reo Māori
  • a supportive, caring environment for mokopuna
  • whānau (collective) sharing of responsibilities, knowledge and expertise
