Simply Kids Preschool
Welcome To Simply Kids Preschool
Simply Kids is based in Onerahi, Whangarei and we are close to local reserves and surrounded by nature.
Our family-orientated childcare centre has been owner operated since 2001. We pride ourselves on offering focused and tailored learning opportunities through our extensive outdoor areas, mini farm, and natural evironment.
At Simply Kids, we strive our best to have your children feel safe and comfortable in an environment that encourages a diverse range of learning experiences and multi-cultural awareness. A trusted relationship between teachers and family/whanau is paramount.
OUR PLANNED INTERACTIVE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME encourages children to become active learners, and helps to develop skills needed for their on-going education.
Our programme follows the principles, goals and strands of Te Wháriki; the New Zealand early childhood curriculum. We also follow an emergent curriculum to plan ways to extend the children’s interests and strengths, thereby empowering them “to grow up as competent and confident learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society”
(Te Wháriki; Ministry of Education, 1996, p.9).
For every child, we maintain a personal portfolio that displays their learning journey through stories and photos. Parents are encouraged to share and contribute to your child's learning experience.
ADVANCED KINDY PROGRAMME
All children from 3 - 5 years are given the choice to participate. This programme is offered for approximately half an hour each day. The children participate in fun and interactive learning experiences with a focus on extending their literacy, numeracy, scientific, artistic, sport, music, and carpentry skills. These experiences are designed to extend the particular cognitive, social and physical abilities of this age group. This programme aims to make the transition from preschool to primary school easier for the children.
We also run a NATURE KINDERGARTEN PROGRAMME where outdoor excursions are a regular occurrence. A carefully supervised group of children venture into the Waimahanga bush reserve to make discoveries and learn about the wonders of our natural environment.
We also have a MINI FARM onsite: Leila the goat, chickens, ducks are all at home in our centre. Children can choose to participate in feeding and caring for our animals.

Te Kōhanga Reo o Raurimu
Te Kōhanga Reo
The kōhanga reo movement is a unique initiative based on total immersion in Māori language and values with the aim of passing on Māori culture to future generations.
Kōhanga reo emphasise the revitalisation of the culture through te reo Māori and are dependent on the active participation of the whole whānau. The kaupapa of kōhanga reo aims to strengthen whānau capabilities in cultural, social, economic, spiritual and political matters. Education, health and wellbeing are inherent within all aspects of the kaupapa. The prime focus is the whānau – its collective development, growth, accountability and wellbeing set within a Māori cultural context.
Kōhanga reo do not regard tamariki in isolation, but as important members of the whānau. The kōhanga reo philosophy is that tamariki will benefit when whānau successfully operate according to the kaupapa. Tamariki are an integral part of whānau development.
The following key goals are the foundation of te kōhanga reo kaupapa established in 1982:
- total immersion in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga in daily operations
- whānau decision-making, management and responsibility
- accountability
- health and wellbeing of mokopuna and whānau.
The key goals of te kōhanga reo assure that there will be:
- security in te reo Māori
- a supportive, caring environment for mokopuna
- whānau (collective) sharing of responsibilities, knowledge and expertise
- greater respect and appreciation of each other.
