A little about us

Welcome to Maungaarangi Welcome Bay Kindergarten.

It is a privilege to learn alongside you and your child at Maungaarangi, ‘Mountains in the Sky’.

Our kindergarten is situated next door to Welcome Bay School and sits on large sloping grounds where our tamariki / children have the opportunity to explore and challenge themselves in a large natural environment. We have achieved a Silver Enviroschools Reflection!

Our vision is ‘Awakening Wairua and Growing Leaders’, through respectful, responsive, reciprocal relationships promoting life long learning.

We believe in intentional teaching, through manakitanga an ‘ethic of care’, so your child will feel safe and nurtured, building implicit relationships with their peers, teachers and whānau.

Children’s passion to learn is fostered through our philosophy and assessment framework Ngā Pūrākau Māori, Māori Legends.

Our following core principles guide our teaching and learning:

  • Ko Te Ngakau Aroha   Holistic well-being
  • Whānaupiripiri   Families and community working together
  • Whenua Whāngaihia  Living alongside the natural world
  • Ngā Kete Marama  Explore and learn
  • Wairua    Spiritual essence and magic

Our localised curriculum, embraces people and places in our community.

A whakatauki / proverb that sit closely with the team is:

Whāia te iti kahurangi

Ki te tūohu koe, me he maunga teitei

Our interpretation: Through encouraging our tamariki to pursue excellence and give it their best shot we create a generation of people prepared to embrace the challenges and learning opportunities that they will engage in the future with a positive outlook and confidence.

What makes our kindergarten special?

  • Large environment provokes kaitiakitanga/guardianship of papatūānuku/mother earth through our forest, gardens and native area
  • Children empowered to self-manage risk-taking, using our purpose built bike riding track and flying fox
  • 100% qualified teachers, valuing authenticity in practice, a sense of fun and committed to being the best we can
  • Pēpe/baby playgroup and Roopū Tuakana for our older children
  • Partnership with Enviroschools
  • On Welcome Bay School grounds, continuity of learning between kindergarten and school.
