A little about us

Our Community

We are well established in the local Whakatane community, playing an active part in providing our families with the best care for their children, along with strong established relationships with supportive services, to provide wrap around to support our families as needed.  Our team brings an abundance of knowledge, culture, and experience that we are extremely proud of, and we strive to make strong connections and work in partnership with family.  We have 6 individual classrooms that cater for all ages 0-6 and our spacious outdoor area is a hidden gem, giving children the opportunity to run, ride, jump and even swim!  We welcome whānau in our community to pop in and take a look!

Each of our Busy Bees McGarvey Road and Busy Bees Douglas Street centres have unique and special identities, working together to support one another, and our community, within our Core Values of Whānau/Family, Respect, Adventure and Passion.

Our Environment

Busy Bees Douglas Street provides well-resourced learning environments, and our spacious and natural outdoor areas give tamariki the opportunity to freely explore and enjoy real grass, water play, a bike track, trees and real grass, to enjoy safe risk-taking and form caring friendships. In the warmer months tamariki can also enjoy swimming in the centres very own pool. We are located on Douglas Street in Whakatane, just round the corner from our McGarvey Road Centre, with both Allandale Primary School and Whakatane High School within walking distance from the centre.

Curriculum & Philosophy

We are committed to follow the aspirations of the New Zealand National ECE Curiculum, Te Whāriki. Te Whāriki envisages kaiako in early learning settings working in partnership with parents, whānau and community to realise this vision. The expectation is that, in their early years, children will experience a curriculum that empowers them as lifelong learners.

Our unique centre has the bonus of two Montessori-inspired classrooms. These two classes provide Montessori activities and resources, with the ability to weave free play as the children desire. Our onsite swimming pool helps to encourage children's water confidence, safety, and other benefits including improved physical, emotional, social and cognitive development.
