A little about us

Our Community

We are well established in the local Whakatane community and feel privileged to care for many tamariki in our community and provide families with the best care for their children. We strive to create a warm and inclusive environment, where whānau always feel welcome and a sense of belonging.

Our centre caters for tamariki aged 0-6years with areas dedicated to each age and development stage, whilst still providing a continuous flow of classrooms, and the opportunity for cuddles and chats 'over-the-gate' allowing tuakana-teina (older-younger) relationships to flourish.

Each of our Busy Bees McGarvey Road and Busy Bees Douglas Street centres have unique and special identities, working together to support one another, and our community, within our core values of Whānau/Family, Respect, Adventure and Passion.

Our Environment

Busy Bees McGarvey Road provides a supportive and engaging environment, where your child receives meaningful care, as well as personalised learning and development. Our centre environment is just amazing, with spacious and natural play areas, art and colour, plentiful resources, trees, real grass, splash pad, edible gardens, fruit trees... you really do need to come and see it for yourself!

Located on McGarvey Road in Whakatane, just round the corner from our Douglas Street Centre and right next to Apanui Primary School, McGarvey Road offers excellent care and education for your little one, right in the heart of our community.

With a nurturing and engaging indoor environment and expansive outdoor play areas, you will hear children's laughter, music, and native bird song, and experience scents of fresh baking, freshly cut grass, fruit and flowers as you move around the centre.  Our passionate, knowledgeable and experienced kaiako (teachers) provide intentional teaching as well as following children's interests, celebrating achievements along the way.

Curriculum & Culture

Our centre has a strong multicultural base and our programmes are reflective of our children, their families and our amazing environment. Our on-site swimming pool builds water confidence and safety skills while also promoting physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development and we offer a wide variety of learning opportunities including a swimming programme, library visits and excursions within our community.

We are committed to follow the aspirations of the New Zealand National ECE Curriculum, Te Whāriki. Te Whāriki envisages kaiako in early learning settings working in partnership with parents, whānau and community to realise this vision. The expectation is that, in their early years, children will experience a curriculum that empowers them as lifelong learners.
