York Street Kindergarten on the outskirts of Masterton has a large outdoor learning environment which is a focus for our programme. We have a semi-rural outlook as we are next to a school farm. Farm animals and wetland birds are a common sight.
We have a small bush area where children can learn respect for the bush environment. Our kindergarten has a strong ethos of caring for our natural environment. Our outdoor area has been designed around the kindergarten’s pepeha which is integrated into the daily programme.
The kindergarten has been part of the local community for over 40 years. During this time there have been many community events and projects. One project has involved planting of a variety of trees to provide shade from the hot Wairarapa summers.
We have an open door policy where visitors are welcome to pop in at any time during the day.
Children learn through a programme based on play. We develop group and individual learning plans through observing children’s interests and we place importance on children seeing themselves as learners.
