Kauri Kids East Coast Bays

THIS CENTRE CLOSED on 15th December 2023

We're a small centre nestled in the heart of Browns Bay that looks after the full and part-time early childhood education needs of the local community.

As part of the East Coast Bays Leisure Centre, we offer preschool gym classes and daily walks to explore the community green, as well as visits to the local library.

Why choose Kauri Kids?

At Kauri Kids, we believe that with the right nurturing all tamariki can be as mighty as the kauri tree. Our goal is to enable our tamariki and their whānau to develop the skills they need to reach their potential and live a healthy and prosperous life. Kauri Kids' vision and values:

Our commitment to sustainability.

We empower tamariki to care for the environment so they can become kaitiaki (custodians), use resources wisely, and take an active role in fighting climate change. Each centre has its own environmental initiatives. These could include:

  • using cloth wipes and nappies instead of disposables
  • wet bags instead of plastic bags
  • worm farming and composting food scraps
  • collecting and repurposing bread tags
  • recycling yoghurt pots and baby food plastic pouches
  • a shared vegetable and herb garden.

The power of free play

We're strong believers in the power of free play and play-based learning. That's why you won't see many 'typical' toys or structured activities when you walk into our spaces. We set tamariki up with real, everyday objects and natural play materials, and leave it up to them to choose what interests them. We help them to develop their imaginations and explore the environment around them. Children love moving and being physically active is an important part of everyday life. With this in mind, we actively encourage children to move freely on their own, as their capabilities and development allow. Tamariki are also given daily opportunities to practice climbing, balancing, kicking, throwing and jumping.

Nurturing relationships

We value respectful relationships. At our centres, our kaiako (teachers) recognise and respond to tamariki as individuals. We value their mana (self-esteem) and their sense of belonging. Kaiako also encourage tuākana / teina (older person/younger person) relationships. We teach social skills by supporting and guiding tamariki in their learning. We encourage them to be resilient, take risks, understand and express their emotions.

Creating global citizens

In order to succeed in our rapidly changing, and increasingly interconnected world, we teach our tamariki to become global citizens. Global citizenship is the idea that everyone, no matter where they live, is part of a worldwide community and they should respect other cultures and the environment and contribute to wider society. Our curriculum helps tamariki develop essential skills that will support their lifelong learning and promote respect for diversity such as:

  • problem-solving,
  • communication,
  • collaboration and
  • cross-cultural awareness.

Our curriculum is designed to create learning experiences and opportunities for the children with the purpose to enhance the development of every child so they can grow into their unique God-given identities and be confident in who they are.

Ages and Stages

We cater for the ages and stages of each child with areas and activities that are tailored to each age group. Whether you’re looking for early childhood care, day care, or preschool child education, we have a program that suits. Here’s some more information on our programs for each age group…

Under 2 years

Our babies area is designed for children to crawl and explore freely within their own safe environment. We believe that primary care promotes strong and loving teacher-child relationships where children’s individual needs and cues are met. Primary care is a form of care that allows a teacher to focus on one small group of children to ensure their needs are met and their development is supported. We also do this by providing each child up to the age of two with a daily notebook where parents can communicate with teachers and read all about their child’s day.

2 - 3 years

Our over twos room is a place where children can explore and extend their interests and learn new skills while making friends. This room is designed to provide areas of learning including the arts, literacy, construction, technology, dramatic play and more. Children are encouraged to make decisions about their day and their learning as teachers support and promote their individual development. The large outdoor environment offers an open space for children to develop their gross motor skills as they run, jump, climb and challenge themselves on our play equipment.

4+ years

Preparing to transition from preschool to primary school is an exciting time in any child’s development and we love to make it special. Our goal is to give your child the best possible start to their school days. We offer a specialised programme, giving your child the opportunity to learn independently and alongside their friends. Our experienced and passionate teachers provide fun learning experiences for children to learn literacy, phonics, letter formation, numeracy and number recognition all while extending their individual goals, interests and strengths.

Browns Bay Taiaotea Kindergarten

Welcome to Browns Bay Taiaotea Kindergarten

Kia Ora, 你好, hallo, 안녕하세요 and welcome to Browns Bay Taiaotea Kindergarten. Our kindergarten is situated in the heart of Browns Bay and we are fortunate to look out across the beautiful Freyberg Park. Browns Bay is called home by people from around the world and our community’s unique multi-cultural heritage is an important and respected part of who we are at Taiaotea.

We are a team of passionate kaiako (teachers) who are patient, calm and respectful. We take time in getting to know our tamariki (children) and their whānau (families) through listening to what is important to them, acknowledging that the wairuatanga (spirit) of the child and their whānau needs regular nourishment and support. This enables us to provide individual learning programmes that ensure tamariki get the most out of their early childhood education before transitioning onto school.

Through research and planning we create inviting, stimulating and innovative environments where sustainable practices and thinking are fostered. These values are at the heart of our practice and strongly embedded within our kindergarten philosophy alongside Te Whāriki, (the Early Childhood Curriculum),  tikanga (ways of being), and dispositional learning.  We are part of Enviroschools and have an ongoing learning programme to ensure our tamariki become guardians of their environment.

Engaging with our local community is a key focus of our kindergarten with regular excursions out into the Browns Bay community to explore our local landmarks, make use of local facilities and build strong connections. We encourage our tamariki to manaaki, show kindness and respect to, all they meet and engage with as they explore our local taonga (treasures).

All this under the watchful eyes of their amazing teachers!

Fantails Room

What fun is had in this room! Specially designed for our 4 to 5 year olds, the teachers lovingly prepare eager minds to build, create, try out, explore, read, and question.  Getting ready for school is our aim, but fun is our game.
