Our learning philosophy

For the past 110 years, the Auckland Kindergarten Association has been igniting young minds by encouraging them to explore their imaginations through play. For many of us, kindergarten was where we began our life of learning; it was where we started learning skills like sharing, tolerance, patience, respect and self-confidence.

We view children as capable, competent, life-long learners, and our philosophy encourages children to make their own learning choices, problem-solve and observe and explore at their own pace…with support from teachers, parents, wider whānau and their peers. We value the importance of child-initiated, play-based experiences. Our kindergarten teachers nurture your children’s interests and natural curiosity by working alongside them, expanding language and introducing mathematical and science concepts, as well as literacy, digital technology and sustainable practices.

Our centres have gardens and natural outdoor spaces where children can create, explore, be imaginative and expressive. There’s plenty of room to safely run about, being imaginative and physically active. In fact, the natural world is essential to free-range play. AKA encourages each kindergarten community to explore and enrich their diversity and uniqueness. Some have regular excursions into the local community; some are Enviroschool kindergartens that live and breathe sustainable practices; while others engage in long-term research on child interest-based programmes of learning.

As an organisation, we formally acknowledge the dual heritage of Aotearoa / New Zealand, and work to uphold the spirit and intent of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in each kindergarten. New Lynn is a beautifully designed centre with plenty of space for children to explore the natural outdoors. The playgrounds are equipped with high quality climbing equipment and are shaded to allow for all day exploration outside. Children love their outdoor environment and are encouraged to grow vegetables and fruit trees in our garden. This is a wonderful way for children to appreciate their surroundings and environment.

The classrooms are specifically designed to suit different age groups and are equipped with heating and cooling systems to suit the climate. Children are provided with an array of resources and equipment to challenge and stimulate their little minds. Teachers are qualified and very experienced and provide a high quality learning programme for all ages. Staff retention is high and teachers are consistently given extra training and education to keep up with current learning theory for children.

Angels Childcare, New Lynn also has a full time on-site chef who provides nutritious and delicious meals to satisfy all little taste buds. Children are provided with hot meals at lunch time and fresh baking in the mornings and afternoons, not to mention fresh and dried fruit.

Families and Whanau are an integral part of our programme and Angels New Lynn celebrate parent and Whanau involvement through Hui Meetings, Family Fun Days, Parent Breakfasts and Parent evenings.

Welcome to our kindergarten!

Rainbow Cottage is a private kindergarten which is family owned and operated. We are licensed for 25 children over the age of 2 for sessional and all-day care. We are a small and personal centre, with a tight-knit professional team of teachers who work hard to provide a fun, educational and nurturing environment. We are particularly proud of our outdoor setting with its large playground and wide range of equipment. We enjoy providing exciting musical experiences. We also love to get to know our families and have them feel a part of our kindergarten community.

Programme

We run a semi-structured programme based on the early childhood curriculum ‘Te Whaariki’. Planning and activities are centred on a weekly theme that has been developed by observing emergent interests. We provide for a balance of creative self-expression, skill development and group activities. Art, music, drama and stories are incorporated into the weekly focus. The children are all encouraged to complete at least one piece of work to take home each day, fostering a sense of achievement. We have a routine throughout our sessions which provides a sense of security. We have an extension programme for the older children before they begin school (our ‘Before Programme’).

Curious Kids is an early learning centre conveniently located just outside Lynn Mall Shopping Centre, with underground parent parking and easy access to public transport.

Horizons Montessori Preschool opened in 2000 and is proudly owned and operated by Mike and Helen Emberson, both qualified early childhood teachers.

Since 2013 our ERO report has assessed us as very well placed to promote positive learning outcomes for children.  We are proud that this assessment positions us in the top 20% of New Zealand preschool centres and requires a routine visit every four years.

Our preschool offers a family feel, catering to 30 children aged 2-6 years, with a caring and nurturing atmosphere.  It’s a place that teachers’ parents and children can feel a strong sense of ownership and belonging – a wonderful foundation for the early years.

We are inspired by children’s interest and love of learning and we support this through an environment rich in resources and devoted, passionate Early Childhood teachers.

Montessori Philosophy

We view children as competent and confident learners.  Our centre philosophy strives to enhance learning opportunities through the philosophy and equipment of Maria Montessori and Te Whāriki the national early childhood curriculum.

We are a distinctive service as we offer a balance of both structured and freeplay periods throughout the day, where learning is a fun and exciting journey of discovery.  Children and teachers co-construct knowledge alongside the active partnership we develop with parents.

We capture and document children’s learning through in-depth assessment documentation.  Teachers use a checklist to track children’s academic knowledge (colours, numbers, shapes, letters, sight words, and scissor skills).  This helps us to understand the child’s current knowledge and to tailor a programme that supports their progress.  Learning stories are used to notice, recognize and respond to children’s emergent interests and supports our planning process.  

The children’s e-portfolios are produced through Educa.  Educa is an ideal way for parents, children and teachers to share and be involved in their child’s learning experiences.  Educa allows parents to invite other family members or friends to engage in their child’s portfolio, to add stories and comments and be involved.  Educa operates a secure site allowing only those invited to access children’s portfolios using a password of their preference. The ease of use of Educa means that stories are accessible immediately and can be viewed on any mobile device such as phone, ipad or computer.  You will receive an alert to let you know something has been added.

Our teacher/child ratio of 1:5 is integral to offering the children scaffolded learning through sustained interest areas such as research and enquiry.  It also provides us the time and opportunity to actively play and participate as we establish strong relationships based on mutual respect and trust. Children freely choose their own activities with teachers encouragement and support to try new challenges, learn new skills and develop their individual interests.

It is important that teachers, families and children feel a strong sense of cultural connection within the preschool where all cultures are respected and celebrated. Biculturalism is supported through understanding Maori culture, language and identity through developing our partnership with whanau and iwi.

Welcome to Nurturing Hearts, formally Three Bears.

In 2020, Three Bears changed hands and in 2021 the team set about to revisit our philosophy, who we are and what is important to us. Changing our name was a part of that process. We wanted a name that represented who we are, what is important to us and spoke to our philosophy. We consulted with our kaitiaki, whānau and owners and settled on Nurturing Hearts early Learning Centre.

We believe a learning environment underpinned with love and kindness is essential and the basis for nurturing our enquiry-based philosophy, Our children learn at their own pace, through their interests and creativity. This is what makes a childhood memorable and gives a lifetime of learning the opportunity take root and be enjoyed.

Confident Learners  is a small family oriented  childcare providing affordable care and education for children aged 2  to 5 years old. The centre is licenced for just 20 Children ensuring individual care and attention for each child while enjoying  a safe and home like environment.

The centre is located on a convenient location in the suburb of New Lynn and serves well to the children from Green Bay, Titirangi and Blockhouse Bay areas.

Confident Learners backs to park grounds thus giving children the opportunity to enjoy natural environment. Due to our close proximity to New Lynn hub the children enjoy regular visits to library, Mitre Ten, and New world.

At the heart of Genius Kids Early Childhood Educational Center is the desire for collaboration between teachers, whanau and the community to support the learning and development of each child. Our curriculum is based on Te Whāriki Early Childhood curriculum and inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach to childcare that puts children at the center of their learning in relationship-driven environments.
