The Learning Space - Eden Terrace

The foundation to The Learning Space philosophy is born from relationships; equal partnerships between children, caregivers, whanau and community and the environment. These relationships are established on the culture of kindness, through caregiving moments and our daily interactions. Children are valued as free and equal human beings who are at all times allowed to tune into their bodies and into their play. Children are supported to develop and explore in their own time and at their readiness. Through our everyday environment we offer each child the ‘known’ through consistency, taking time and reciprocal communication. Our teachers role model the centre values within their practice; their journeys enriched with passion and joy as they learn alongside one another. This empowers the child to fulfill their rights for expression in many different ways, creating opportunities to discover their individual identities. Parent and whanau participation is fundamental for future extension of the daily life of The Learning Space, embracing partnership with both local and wider communities and celebrating the rich diversity of the languages and cultural significance that families bring to our everyday experiences. Learning Space is an early learning centre located in Eden Terrace, Auckland City, handy to the Auckland CBD and surrounding suburbs. The environment at The Learning Space is filled with light, natural and recycled materials plus resources to provoke a sense of wonder and curiosity.

Eden Terrace is a small, intimate space for only 23 children aged between 3 months and 3 years allowing for strong relationships between children, parents/whanau and educators. Children usually start before they turn one year old.

We are open from 7:45 am – 5:45 pm Monday – Friday.

It’s an inspiring, thought provoking learning centre where children are empowered to use all their senses as a form of expression and exploration. The children are viewed as free and equal human beings, able to construct theories of the world around them. An experienced teaching team is there to support and guide the children. The educators daily practice is underpinned by the values of kindness, respect, trust, collaboration, joy and wonder which are interwoven into the centre philosophy, culture and beliefs.

“Take care of our children. Take care of what they hear, take care of what they see, take care of what they feel. For how the children grow, so will be the shape of Aotearoa.” – Dame Whina Cooper

The Learning Space is found at the end of a quiet street over the road from Basque Park. Close to the Newton Rd, North Western Motorway interchange. We are handy to Ponsonby, Mt Eden, Sandringham, Grey Lynn and Kingsland and are convenient if travelling through this area to the Auckland CBD or Newmarket.

United by our differences

We recognise that every child is unique. We believe in promoting an environment where allcultures of our tamariki (children) and whanau (families) are valued and respected. We create a holistic environment where te reo Māori (Māori language) and tikanga Māori (Māori customs and beliefs) are promoted and protected.

We celebrate diversity and promote an inclusive centre where each child develops a sense of belonging.

Nestled in a play-based environment, we believe children learn through doing what they do best – PLAYING.

At the AGGS ChildCare Centre, children will develop language skills, social skills, self-help skills, gross and fine motor skills through play. We embrace the beauty and intimacy of the natural world. There is no such thing as bad weather and we support as much outdoor play as we can.

We believe that children make sense of their world in an unhurried and peaceful environment. This nourishes and empowers the mind and body by giving tamariki the opportunities to take risks and challenge their abilities. Children will be able to learn and express themselves in an environment that is safe and secure and more importantly when they are happy and having fun.

We would like to welcome you and your child to City Preschool. We are a privately owned small boutique childcare centre licensed for 25 children, on Auckland’s city fringe. We are located in the heart of Newton on Upper Queen Street. The Preschool is conveniently situated just off the North Western Motorway and right off Symonds Street exit on a quiet street, that is easily accessible from main roads and is in close proximity of local suburbs Eden Terrace and Grafton. We have a passionate and experienced teaching team that strive to promote meaningful learning experiences that inspire children to grow and develop into confident unique individuals, that are empowered to explore and discover the magic and wonder in the world around them.

Our philosophy

Here at City Preschool we are inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to teaching and learning. We strive to promote and provide a rich and dynamic, nurturing, fun environment that inspires children to grow and develop into unique individuals.

We empower children to become confident, competent and capable lifetime learners by following their dreams and aspirations, through active exploration and social interactions with others. We provide an environment where children can discover the magic that can be created when they engage in meaningful learning experiences.

Our teachers are passionate about learning and providing experiences that support your child by encouraging independent and forward thinking. As teachers we will treasure every moment of each child’s learning journey and respect their freedom to connect with others and take control of their own learning and development. We believe that learning is a collaborative approach and those ‘Special’ moments should be shared and celebrated with others. We place a strong emphasis on building reciprocal partnerships with parents, teachers and children to develop a community of learners and inquirers.
