Glamorgan Kindergarten

Haere Mai - Welcome

We believe that children are citizens of our community and have the right to a welcoming, safe, stimulating, affirming and challenging environment that enables them to develop and learn at their own pace.

We are guided by our early childhood curriculum, Te Whariki. At Glamorgan Kindergarten we believe it is important for children to experience a welcoming, safe, stimulating, affirming and challenging environment. We aim to empower and support children so that they are able to lead their own learning journey. We recognise the importance of the Treaty of Waitangi by acknowledging New Zealand's bicultural heritage throughout the programme. We value an environment that is inclusive and where diversity is embraced. We value partnerships with parents and whānau which will support positive learning outcomes for children. As part of Enviroschools, we aspire to empower and encourage our whānau and wider community to be conscious thinkers, kaitiaki (guardians), and to create a peaceful and sustainable future.

Our Purpose

To provide effective early childhood education services to ensure every child leaves kindergarten with the foundations of personal development and a love of life and learning

Your Child, Your Place

At our centres your child will learn:

  • How to relate to other children and their teachers

  • How to share and explore their understanding of people, places and things
  • How to express ideas and acknowledge feelings
  • Negotiating, turn taking, cooperation and conflict resolution
  • Respect for other cultures, languages and traditions

  • Hauora (the four dimensions of health), physical, mental, social and spiritual health

Our History

Kaitiaki Kindergartens were originally known as the East Coast Bays Free Kindergarten Association. Torbay was the association’s first kindergarten which opened in 1954 and it is still a very active kindergarten to this day. As we grew we became known as the Northern Auckland Free Kindergarten Association. Today, we go by the name of ‘Kaitiaki Kindergartens’. Kaitiaki means, “a guardian or trustee, typically of an environmental area or resource.” This change reflects our responsibility to each and every child, community member and kindergarten in the Kaitiaki wider family.

We’re about:

  • children, families and whanau
  • quality early childhood education
  • a qualified and registered workforce
  • community
  • not-for-profit
  • home grown
  • kiwi owned

Kindergarten is a partnership between:

Teachers

Qualified, registered teachers provide and deliver educational programmes under the guidance and support of the Professional Practice Leaders.

Our communities

Torbay Kindergarten

Welcome to Torbay Kindergarten - Nurturing a Lifelong Passion for Discovery and Learning

Torbay Kindergarten is the oldest kindergarten in the East Coast Bays, officially opening on Saturday 31st May 1969. However, it started long before then… In 1947 a private kindergarten was started in the new hall by Miss Wiseman and her sister, Miss Enid, as a helper. After much fundraising the site and building that is Torbay Kindergarten today was built.

We welcome you to browse our site or come into our kindergarten and have a look around, meet the teachers and enjoy our warm and friendly environment.

Our curriculum reflects the principles of Te Whariki and our commitment to creating and maintaining a unique bi-cultural, sustainable environment that reflects Aotearoa New Zealand.

We provide a welcoming, safe, caring and fun environment where learning, play and extending children’s strengths and interests are promoted.

Exploration of the natural environment encourages children’s imagination, independence, creativity and respect.

We build positive partnerships with whānau through effective communication and foster a sense of belonging and well-being for children and whānau.

All children are valued as individuals and supported in their unique learning journey. We focus on developing positive dispositions for life long learning.

We are facilitators, observers and provocateurs who provide opportunities and possibilities to extend children’s interests and promote best learning outcomes for children.

We are leaders in our learning community, acting as role models for citizenship by fostering respectful and reciprocal relationships where social competency is currency.

At Torbay Kindergarten we weave sustainable/environmental practice through all aspects of our programme.  This is reflected in our beach trips to Waiake Beach, our recycling and bokashi composting system, and our wonderful natural environment including our mud pit, earth kitchen and lazy river with rain water tanks.

Our children are surrounded by an environment that they treasure and this in turn nurtures a strong sense of belonging. They learn to respect their surroundings and are acquiring skills that will translate into sustainable lifelong habits.

Torbay Playcentre

Our Vision and Mission:

“We love and care for our Families. We love and care for our Playcentre

Through…..

Friendship, support, creating happy memories and growing through play.”

Our children are supported to become confident, competent self-directed learners through play based around their interests. Our children gain knowledge through play, participation and positive guidance.

Our children develop social skills which help them to get school ready and benefit them throughout life. Siblings attend together, allowing older children to mentor younger children and practise empathy and caring. All our children are catered for, from babies to those ready to head off to school.

We are a close knit community that care and support one another, we are all in this together and have all been there. Parents also grow life long friendships at Playcentre.

Our parents are actively involved in providing our children’s learning programmes. The high adult to child ratio allows a good balance for group and individual support during each session. We have lots of fun!

Childrens Ark

The Children’s Ark is a community based early childhood centre that affirms Christian values and beliefs.  We offer every child and their family a safe, positive and challenging learning environment, where the emphasis is on fun.

Our professional teaching team believes that each child is unique and that young children learn best through play. The programme is based on Te Whariki, and aims to build on each child’s strengths and interests. Children are encouraged to make their own play choices and to actively experiment, explore and extend their thinking with support and guidance. Teachers work hard to ensure that learning opportunities are not limited by age, gender, ability or background.

We acknowledge the role of family as the first teacher and support families to participate in all aspects of our programme. In building parent partnerships we aim to understand the priorities, interests and concerns of the children, families and community we serve.

Some of the reasons to choose Children’s Ark

100% Qualified teachers

Each room is staffed with fully qualified teachers, giving above minimum teacher to child ratios. We believe that higher ratios provide better quality care and education for the children.

Our teaching team is stable, including some who have been with us for over 10 years.  This provides great stability and continuity for your child.

Learning through play

Our professional teaching team believes that each child is unique and that young children learn best through play.  The programme is based on Te Whariki (NZ Early Childhood Curriculum), and builds on each child’s strengths and interests.  Children are encouraged to make their own play choices and to actively experiment, explore and extend their thinking with support and guidance.  Teachers work hard to ensure that learning opportunities are not limited by age, gender, ability or background.

As part of our preschool education programme, we encourage children to explore independently in a safe environment, learning through play, making choices, thus becoming empowered to be creative, imaginative and resourceful, solving problems, whilst having fun in the process.

At the heart of our teaching practice, we value and share our Christian faith by upholding Christian values and beliefs.

Outside play is an important part of our curriculum and children are encouraged to engage with our extensive natural environment on a daily basis.

“Kids who play outside are more adaptable, less likely to get sick and get along with each other better.  It’s no surprise ‘nature prescriptions’ are being written by paediatricians to help children cope with a range of issues from difficulty concentrating to autism” - Swings & Roundabouts, Sept 2014

Caring for the environment

As part of our zero waste journey we are using eco nappy services, collecting food scraps in worm farms and bokashi bins, and partnering with the Hibiscus Coast Zero Waste.

When selecting our play resources we are mindful of avoiding plastic items which will ultimately end up in a landfill. Most of our resources have been carefully selected using home-made, up-cycled loose parts that stretch rather than hinder a child’s imagination.

“There are other bonuses when we use natural materials instead of bought plastic stuff. These natural items themselves are the epitome of the mathematical patterns nature employs in creation, affording our children the chance to 'down load' these patterns, as well as the subtleties of colour, texture, smell and sound” - Pennie Brownlee

Children have a richer play experience when they interact with real and natural play resources.  And it’s great for the environment too!
