Annabel's Educare - Avonhead
Through centre-based learning, we ensure your child's educational, relationship, and creative development. We focus on their strengths in the present so they can succeed in the future. We take pride in the educational preschool environment that we offer our children. It gives them limitless opportunities to develop into their full potential.
At Annabel’s Educare in Avonhead, Christchurch, our preschool has been converted from a family home. This home-like kindergarten environment provides a warm and welcoming feel to all children and their whanau. With minimal fixtures, our preschool has options to be transformed into the educational and play spaces that will best encourage our children to thrive.
One of our favourite features of our preschool is our outdoor verandas. Unlike other kindergartens in Christchurch that have to stay indoors during a rainy day, these verandas can be enclosed. That means we never have a reason not to be outside and can adapt to all weather conditions.

Portobelo Early Learning Centre - Avonhead
Portobelo Avonhead is a small, warm early learning centre on Yaldhurst Road, welcoming tamariki aged 0–5 across our connected Nursery and Preschool. Our vision is simple: to be a place you want to be - where children feel safe, known, and genuinely at home.
As a parent-owned centre, we understand how much this decision matters. That's why everything we do is shaped by what families actually need.
Our Environment
Set in a converted house on a generous section, Portobelo Avonhead has a calm, home-like feel that children settle into naturally. Our rooms are thoughtfully prepared to invite curiosity and creative play, with resources that change regularly to spark fresh interest and exploration.
Outside, tamariki have access to a huge Kiwi backyard - real grass, trees to climb, gardens, decking, and space to run, dig, swing, and simply be. We value green time over screen time, and our outdoor environment is as much a part of the programme as anything that happens indoors. We believe the environment itself is one of our greatest teachers.
Nursery (0–2 years)
The first 1000 days of a child's life are among the most significant, and we take that responsibility seriously. Our nursery is a calm, home-like space where babies and toddlers are cared for as individuals, with sleep, kai and play following each child's own rhythm rather than the clock.
Kaiako take time to truly know each tamariki - their cues, their comfort, their curiosity. Alongside warm, responsive caregiving, tamariki explore sensory, creative and nature-based experiences indoors and out, always at their own pace. Fresh seasonal purees are prepared onsite for our youngest tamariki not yet on solids. Nappies, wipes and sunblock are all included.
Preschool (2–5 years)
Our preschool welcomes tamariki from age two through to school age - a time of enormous growth in language, independence and friendships. Days are child-led and flexible, with outdoor play, small group learning and plenty of uninterrupted exploration. Each child's programme is planned around their individual interests, pace and goals.
As tamariki grow, the programme becomes increasingly rich. Our four-year-olds take part in dedicated daily inquiry time focused on school-readiness skills like collaboration, communication, confidence and problem-solving - preparing them for their next big adventure with a strong foundation beneath them.
Our Approach
Our programme is guided by Te Whāriki, New Zealand's early childhood curriculum. We focus on the whole child — their social, emotional, physical and creative development — through discovery learning and an environment intentionally designed to inspire curiosity. Our skilled kaiako use everything they learn about your child's unique way of seeing the world to guide their individual learning journey.
We weave manaakitanga (kindness and care for others) and kaitiakitanga (care for the environment) through everything we do, and we instil a sense of wonder and adventure in the everyday.
Our Kaiako
We operate at 100% qualified, and we maintain quality ratios above the minimum Ministry of Education requirements. Our team builds genuine, lasting relationships with tamariki and their whānau - and those relationships are at the heart of everything.
Food and Essentials
Every meal is prepared fresh onsite by our dedicated chef, following a seasonal four-week menu. From garden to table, tamariki are involved in growing, harvesting and sharing kai - building a real connection to where their food comes from. Morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and a late snack are provided for full-day tamariki. We cater for a wide range of allergies and intolerances. Nappies, wipes and sunblock are included in our fees.
Settling In
We never rush the settling process. After your tour, we invite you to bring your child for a relaxed stay-and-play so they can begin to feel at home. From there, settling is gradual and always child-led, with a personalised plan for every family. When your child is ready for school, we reach out to their chosen primary school on your behalf - so they walk in already known and understood.
Come and See Us
The best way to experience Portobelo is to visit. We'd love to show you around, introduce you to our kaiako, and help you get a feel for what makes our centre special.
