Tui Early Learners Nestlings/Fledglings

Tui Early Learners are five privately owned childcare centres in Palmerston North and Feilding which provide high quality early childhood education and care for children from birth to starting school. Our vision is 'what is in the best interest of the child?'.

All of our Palmerston North centres achieved the highest rating possible by the Education Review Office - a 'Very Well Placed' 4 year review cycle (Feilding has not been reviewed as yet). This places us in the top 5% of childcare centres in New Zealand and one of very few childcare providers with all centres having the best review possible.

Our Philosophy

At Tui, we believe that early childhood education is a collaboration between parents, children and teachers.

Parents are important to us - you entrust us with your children; you appreciate us; you challenge us; you support us.

Children are important to us - they are the reason we come to work with a smile every morning! Children delight us, test us, cuddle us, extend us, learn with us.

Teachers are important - all children have great potential that we need to understand and guide so we continue our own learning through professional development both as individuals and as teams. Parents and families are joint players with teachers in the task of raising healthy, curious, happy, resilient children.

The environment is important - we like to work and play in attractive surroundings so our buildings are clean, relatively tidy, and pleasing to the eye. The outdoor environments are large, have colourful and interesting gardens, and a variety of activities. Our resources are appropriate for the ages of the children using them, and are safe but still challenging.

Here are a few of the cool things that we do:

  • Hang up our bags on hooks and place shoes underneath, just like at school
  • Develop skills for taking care of ourselves like getting dressed, making healthy food choices, looking after our belongings
  • Make our own morning tea and learn how to use a knife, fork and glass
  • Use cool equipment like hot glue guns, hammers and nails, and tablets
  • Learn to care for our environment and the things that live in it like our fish, frog and garden
  • Kapa haka group where we learn waiata and mahi-a-ringa (songs with actions in Maori)
  • Brain Gym (physical activities that help engage your brain for learning)
  • Science is big here and we do lots of activities that help us to make sense of the world around us
  • When we are six months off school, we bring our own lunch box once a week and a homework book with some extra cool activities to fine tune literacy and numeracy skills

Tui Early Learners Young Investigators

In our programme, children are mostly free to choose what they will work on and the routines they are involved in are respectful and gentle, taking the child's emotions and well being into account. We are supportive of transition times, when children are arriving or leaving, as some find this quite hard from time to time.

We offer snacks and lunchtime for extended periods so that children can choose when they feel ready to eat.  Toileting is a matter of reminders rather than a 'must do now'.  Sleep time happens if a parent requests it and the child is willing (although we do make having a sleep/rest a very peaceful experience).

We encourage children to respect the rights and needs of other people through role modelling between teachers and with children.  We have our own special way of speaking and acting positively with children to help them manage their emotions and act in ways that do not hurt themselves or others.

We are very fortunate to have a large outside environment that provides space for children to be alone or work with others.  Changes happen frequently in this area in accordance with children's interests and the teachers' enthusiasms but a feature always are our gardens.  We believe that all of us have an entitlement to work and play in a pleasant environment.

At Tui  we value children’s interests, strengths and abilities. We recognize young children’s need to develop their abilities to become independent and their desire to begin to guide their own learning experiences and outcomes. To achieve this we include a variety of free play and planned events within the routine of the Tui day.

Young children are seeking some independence and control over aspects of their lives. They are beginning to realise and practice their skills, interests and abilities. A learning journey may be initiated through the interests of the child, a peer or group, a teacher, or by a resource or question. Independence in the eating, sleeping and toileting routines are also ways in which children are provided with an appropriate opportunity for decision making.
