Our Vision | Te wawata mātāmua

To provide the best possible Preschool experience through inspiring a love of learning, providing a stimulating, safe and nurturing environment and fostering genuine partnerships with whānau and community.

Our Philosophy | Ngā whanonga pono

At Capital City Preschool we believe in providing a fun, stimulating and nurturing learning environment for our children with a strong focus on literacy and mathematics, socialisation, technology, sustainability, arts and culture and education. Kaiako and whānau work in partnership to build respectful, positive, kind, caring and meaningful relationships where the identity and values of all our children and whānau are welcomed and celebrated. We provide a high quality learning programme where we are instilling a love of learning into all our akonga ensuring they continue to grow into competent and confident learners and communicators, healthy and resilient in mind, body and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they will have a successful future as global citizens.

We have a commitment to Te Whāriki (the early childhood curriculum) and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Both of these documents are woven into our everyday practices as we pay respect to the bicultural heritage of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Ka mahi tahi ngā kaiako me ngā whānau kia whāngaia te whanaungatanga, kia whakamana i te tuakiri me ngā whanonga pono o ā mātou tamariki me ō mātou whānau katoa. Kia ora, kia aumangea i tō rātou hinengaro, i tō rātou tinana me tō rātou wairua, pūmau tonu ki tō rātou tūrangawaewae me te mōhiotanga he rangi tā rātou hei tangata o te ao.

He takohanga tō mātou ki Te Whāriki (he whāriki matauranga mō ngā mokopuna o Aotearoa) me Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Kua rarangahia ēnei tuhinga e rua ki rō ā mātou mahi ia rā, ia rā i a mātou e whakamana i te whakapapa tikanga rua o Aotearoa.

BestStart Leeds Street

BestStart Leeds Street is conveniently situated in the Wellington inner city, our extended learning environment. We provide opportunities for children to develop their independence, building self-esteem and pride in themselves.

Urban Explorers

We extend our learning and sense of belonging to Wellington City, through being urban explorers in our neighbourhood

We are seen out and about the central city every week. We explore the city for art whether it be the streets, art galleries or museums, we photograph it, draw it and have discussions about it.

We also leave the city to go on our weekly Nature Connection Programme where the children head to the bush for the morning to discover nature at its best,  giving them opportunities to be active and adventurous.

Richard Louv who founded the Children and Nature Movement said, “The child in nature is an endangered species, and the health of children and the health of the Earth are inseparable” (2005).

Alongside our Primary Caregiving practice, which is inspired by the RIE philosophy, we believe partnership with whānau is important in providing quality care and holistic education for our children.  We believe our children’s home culture is an important part of a child’s developing identity as they bring with them new language, knowledge and experiences to share with us and guide their learning.

We provide opportunities for our children to develop their independence, building their self-esteem and pride in themselves.  Our programme also fosters children’s communication and sense of expression through implementation of baby sign language.

Literacy and numeracy is incorporated through the daily programme with opportunities for children to explore and understand in a supported environment.

We have our own resident cook who prepares healthy and delicious morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea for the children each day.

Te Wharemarie Tamariki

A CBD Childcare Centre (Te Wharemarie Tamariki) is a not-for-profit incorporated society in central Wellington providing care and education for children aged 6 months to 5 years old.

We welcome all children and families. Our community organisation was established in 1987 to provide casual care in the inner city, but as time went by, there was greater demand for full-time care for children in the CBD area.

The Centre is governed by a parent/whanau committee. Te Wharemarie Tamariki means “The Children’s House of Peace”. Children are cared for in an environment that nurtures, protects, and encourages learning.

One of the major benefits of our Centre is that we have close access to a wide range of environment that include the waterfront, Te Papa museum, Capital E, Civic Centre to name just a few. We do regular excursions and promote education outside of the classroom (EOTC).

The learning environment encompasses the principles and strands of Aotearoa New Zealand’s Early Childhood Education curriculum known as Te Whariki.

We are strongly committed to providing a calm, unhurried and stimulating environment for all our children.
