Our Environment
We are a small centre located near the beautiful Ruakākā beach in a tight-knit community. We believe that as an early learning centre, we have an important part to play in our local community and a very special opportunity to positively impact the lives of our young tamariki in their early stages of development. Tamariki, whānauand kaiako are welcomed into an inclusive, warm, fun respectful and supportive environment that view children as capable, confident learners Our environment is made up of 2 separate areas our Small poppies and Tall poppies!
Small Poppies (up to 3 years)
Our environment is based on building loving and trusting bonds between infants/toddlers and teachers, who structure the day according to individual needs. Teachers work closely with families to understand infant cues and develop a routine that supports children’s natural rhythms. Play is open-ended and full of fun as we embrace the unknown of how children explore and experiment with their ideas and theories of how the world around them works.
Tall Poppies (2 – 6 years)
Our Kaiako observe tamariki closely to identify children’s interests and based on parent collaboration learning provocations are set up for tamariki, which are challenging, provide curiosity and active exploration. Children’s self-help skills are very important at this stage and children are supported to go to the toilet on their own, wash hands, dress themselves, serve up their own kai. We value that each child learns at their own pace and when they are ready, and that play is children’s work.
School readiness programme- Our transition to school programme, ‘Extension Programme’ is dedicated to further supporting our akoranga in their readiness for to school. We work to make some aspects of school more familiar and practice the values seen within our school communities. Through consistent relationships and communication with our local kura, we can ensure our Extension Programm curriculum is current and responsive to the needs, and stages of our learners. Predominant areas that we support are; self-help and regulation skills, early mathematics and literacy, name recognition and fine/ gross motor development

Educare Bream Bay
Educare Bream Bay is located in the new Ruakaka Town Centre, close to Bream Bay College giving us a great location and proximity to everything in the Bream Bay area. Our centre is a natural, coastal centre that embraces diversity.
At Educare Bream Bay we believe that fostering a child’s sense of belonging and wellbeing encourages children to become confident and capable individuals and enhances their learning and development.
We are a coastal centre with one whare split in two for Ngā Pēpe (under two year old pēpe) and Ngā Kiwi (over 2 year old tamariki).
From the minute you arrive at Educare Bream Bay, you feel a sense of belonging. Kaiako and tamariki embrace a culture of manaaki; where you will be shown aroha as we learn and respect each others ways of knowing, being and doing. You will be celebrated for your successes.
We believe in embracing the local whakapapa as our guiding curriculum; we are kaitiaki of Manaia- Te Maunga, Terenga Paraoa- te Moana, te whenua me te iwi and this is evident through our involvement with the community, our te Tiriti based practice, our love for Te Reo Māori and our amazingly creative natural environment.

Marsden Childcare Centre
Our Philosophy
At Marsden Childcare our aim is to create a fun place of love and learning, fostering a strong sense of manaaki (ethic of care) that welcomes whānau, and teachers into an environment where they feel loved, safe, seen, heard, and respected.
We provide specialised, quality care and education for tamariki in surroundings designed specifically to meet their needs. A place where each child’s mana is valued, and tamariki are encouraged to be themselves.
We will help our tamariki to learn and grow by trusting them to make their own choices, supporting them in their endeavours to explore and discover the world. Accepting each and every child for who they are, where they come from, and the knowledge they bring with them. Whilst encouraging children to be kind in their words and actions, developing respectful ways of being.
We support whānau in their role as primary caregivers, respecting their choices and preferences regarding the care and education of their tamariki, therefore ensuring whānau feel comfortable with the rhythms, rituals, and routines at Marsden Childcare. Building and maintaining authentic relationships will nurture ongoing open dialogue about their child’s learning and development, and furthermore secure the knowledge that each child’s well-being is very important to us.
We are a team, sharing our collective knowledge and skills, keeping up with current issues, trends, research, and providing a Tiriti based curriculum to the best of our ability; striving to ensure tamariki in our care have optimum learning opportunities and experiences.
At Marsden Childcare we are inspired to foster the potential within our tamariki, to provide an environment where these capable tamariki can be curious, explore and play in a place where they feel they belong; a foundation to lifelong learning!

Te Kōhanga Reo o Takahiwai
Te Kōhanga Reo
The kōhanga reo movement is a unique initiative based on total immersion in Māori language and values with the aim of passing on Māori culture to future generations.
Kōhanga reo emphasise the revitalisation of the culture through te reo Māori and are dependent on the active participation of the whole whānau. The kaupapa of kōhanga reo aims to strengthen whānau capabilities in cultural, social, economic, spiritual and political matters. Education, health and wellbeing are inherent within all aspects of the kaupapa. The prime focus is the whānau – its collective development, growth, accountability and wellbeing set within a Māori cultural context.
Kōhanga reo do not regard tamariki in isolation, but as important members of the whānau. The kōhanga reo philosophy is that tamariki will benefit when whānau successfully operate according to the kaupapa. Tamariki are an integral part of whānau development.
The following key goals are the foundation of te kōhanga reo kaupapa established in 1982:
- total immersion in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga in daily operations
- whānau decision-making, management and responsibility
- accountability
- health and wellbeing of mokopuna and whānau.
The key goals of te kōhanga reo assure that there will be:
- security in te reo Māori
- a supportive, caring environment for mokopuna
- whānau (collective) sharing of responsibilities, knowledge and expertise
- greater respect and appreciation of each other.

Bream Bay Kindergarten
Our programme draws from the interests of the child and is supported by the strengths and passions of the educators, whanau and community surrounding the child.
Teaching and learning is viewed as a collaborative partnership where reciprocal relationships enhance the learning process. We believe that learning is enhanced when children are immersed in an environment which fosters a sense of fun, eager engagement and curiosity in the learning process.
We seek to empower children to make positive life choices and believe it is important to nurture the dimensions of health, physical and emotional well being for children to reach their full potential.
