BestStart Manurewa Central

BestStart Manurewa Central is a community-based centre that our families love to be part of. Our children thrive in the dynamic and fun learning environment in which every child is nurtured and celebrated. We offer sessions, short days, and full-day options both part-time or full time. Call in to see how we can help your child become an independent, confident learner.

Where Culture Lives

When you walk into BestStart Manurewa Central you feel the sense of belonging. Strong relationships with each child and teacher-parent partnerships is the centre foundation. A rich programme celebrating cultural diversity develops the learning, fun and discovery.

Building knowledge around sustainability - We are on a journey of becoming a more sustainable centre and having less impact on the environment. Our programme learning is to look after the environment, care for our plants and reap the garden to table benefits.

Rich cultural diversity – each child’s home culture is valued. We take every opportunity to celebrate, share hospitality and learn about each other. We use a wide range of teaching approaches and strategies when working with our children and use the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whāriki, to provide engaging and stimulating programmes that are exciting for all the children in our centre.

Tuakana-teina relationships - Our centre values and extends tuakana (older) – teina (younger) relationships. The older or more experienced children take the younger ones under their wing and support their learning. They do this by celebrating with them, inviting them in to play and ensuring they get a turn. We role model inclusiveness and all our children feel connected and involved in centre life, with a real sense of belonging.

Leading learning – BestStart Manurewa Central is an inclusive centre for all learners. Our youngest children love to explore with their whole bodies, they like movement and anything messy. Our toddlers are supported in their development and interests, they are encouraged to explore at their own pace and develop their confidence and skills. Preschoolers become involved in projects, are presented with new challenges and develop their social competence and independence.

Be School Ready - Our Be School Ready initiative is carefully designed to support children’s next big learning step when they move to primary school. We support parents and children as they develop the skills and attitudes for being a lifelong learner. We have a unique advantage with strong relationships with Manurewa West and Rowandale Primary schools.  We connect with them regularly to ensure children are familiar with staff and the transition to school is streamlined.

Our rooms

Honey Pots (up to 2 years)

Polar Bears (3.5-6 years)

Our Polar Bears programme provides opportunities throughout the day for children to contribute to the curriculum, helping to make decisions about what is set up, and share their ideas to slowly prepare our little ones for their next learning adventure.

School readiness programme -

Our school readiness programme includes fortnightly visits to Rowandale Primary School, allowing children to become familiar with the school environment and ease their transition. School readiness principles are embedded throughout all learning activities, promoting the development of essential skills and knowledge needed for primary school.

Manurewa - Auckland

Manurewa Playcentre

Manurewa Playcentre

Manurewa Playcentre is an early childhood education centre for ages 0 to 6 years. It is similar to Kindergarten with a wide range of activities for children including painting, climbing, sandpit play etc. The difference is the parents are the teachers. So instead of leaving your children at day care parents can take an active role in the very important early years.

We are part of the Tamaki Playcentre Association and New Zealand Playcentre Federation. We receive government funding like other early childhood education centres and are subject to the same review processes and reporting.

Playcentre began in 1941 primarily as a support service to women left raising children alone due to partners being away with the second world war. Manurewa Playcentre opened in 1960. We are part of a long standing organisation and enjoy teaching our Tamariki.

Session Times

There are two different types of session:

Family sessions are the best time to visit us if you're interested in learning about our centre. These are held from 9am to 12pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. These sessions are open to all children, accompanied by their parents or caregivers.

Big Kids sessions are held on Thursdays. Please note: Thursday is not open to visitors. These sessions are for children aged from 3 to 6 years and run a little longer, from 9am to 1pm. This is a drop-off session run by two amazing former Playcentre parents who hold Playcentre/Early Childhood qualifications. The Big Kids often go on trips around Auckland.

You can enrol for any two or more days. To enrol in Big Kids, a child must be attending at least two other sessions.

From Birth to School

We have a separate room so our youngest Tamariki can sleep in a quiet and safe environment.

Playcentre has a high adult to child ratio of 3 to 1 which enables us to deal more effectively with problem behaviour, such as bullying, should it occur. Policies are in place to work through the issues without laying blame in a calm and controlled manner.

As children approach school age many of them also attend sessions at the Kindergarten behind our Playcentre. This helps prepare them for the change of going to school and is also convenient as they may attend a morning session at Playcentre and an afternoon session at Kindergarten.

Koha Donations

Most of the funding we receive is from the government. Parents pay a donation of $20 a term when able (or $27 for two or more children). There is a $15 koha for the 'big kids' session each term.

YMCA Early Learning Centre Manurewa

We are big believers that children learn best while they are having a blast, so at YMCA Manurewa Early Learning Centre, we place a big emphasis on children learning and having fun at the same time.

That’s why our centre has a great school ready programme as we take children every week to the local school as we are fortunate to be located right on the school grounds. Our environment is set up beautifully to support children’s learning and development and we place a huge emphasis on making our environment stand out.

We provide a multicultural environment that we are exceptionally proud of, which meets the needs and aspirations of children and their whanau.

At YMCA Manurewa Early Learning Centre we have fully licenced teachers, who are passionate about providing a high quality education that is tailored to the needs of each child, and the wider community. We believe building strong kids results in strong communities – if you share that vision, we would love to have your child at our centre.

Explore, learn & smile!

Our outside area is protected by a mighty Puriri tree, which shelters us from the seasonal elements. Our tree is located at the front of our centre and centralises our playground area. Children are able to explore the surroundings of our tree and enjoy the natural resources around them. You will find children in our mud pit, sandpit, watering our vegetable garden or simply exploring our large deck area with their bikes.

We encourage our children to explore the natural world around them and we often do gardening and picking fruit from our fruit trees. Our centre explores nature indoors and outdoors and you will often find provocations and set ups using natural resources from our garden so children are able to explore using all five of their senses.

Strength & success!

We offer a range of learning experiences for children to explore. This includes the way we set up our learning environment to allow children to explore open-ended resources. We offer natural resources that allow children to learn about the world around them and we do this through provocations. We nurture children’s wellbeing and making sure, we build a sense of belonging for the child and their whanau when they start at our centre. Our environment is seen as inviting and calm and we are here to tend to children’s needs and build on their lifelong learning.

Jump, move & have fun!

Our close connection to Manurewa West Primary school next-door means that our children are able to utilise the school grounds and explore the outdoor environment. This includes exploring the basketball courts, run around the big field and playing on the playground! We also do fun and exciting activities with children to help build on their gross motor skills such as yoga and dancing and we facilitate this in our everyday learning experiences for children

BestStart Wattle Downs

BestStart Wattle Downs is a childcare and early childhood education centre on Coxhead Road, close to Mahia Road and Wattle Farm Reserve. We're devoted to caring for children in the Wattle Downs area and the wider community of Manurewa.

Let's get stuck in! We're here to make a change

We are a multicultural centre and we use play as a tool to help our tamariki develop into wonderful human beings. We welcome children from 3 months to 6. We pride ourselves on working in partnership with parents and families to ensure that we are working towards the same goals. Our centre is run between two buildings. The Little Tui’s room caters for our children from 3 months to 2 ½ years.  Our Pukeko room caters for children from 2 ½ to 5 years. Our newly renovated outdoor area is inviting and challenges our children to take risks and gain control over their bodies.

Our Learning Spaces

Little Tuis – our infants room: The family-orientated room of Little Tuis is a calm and relaxing place for your infants in which they are supported in learning at their own pace with the help of our teachers.  We encourage our infants to showcase their unique personalities while gaining the confidence to be risk-takers and accomplish milestones that help them grow from dependent babies into independent toddlers. We use heuristic play or treasure baskets as learning tools. We love seeing our babies use everyday items as an open-ended resource.  They surprise us every day with the inventive and interesting ways in which they interact with the items.  Come and take a look for yourself.
Pukeko – our preschool room: Our preschool room is a hive of activity with teachers setting up different activities and experiences to engage our tamariki. We pride ourselves on our relationship with Clayton Park Primary School who support our Be School Ready initiative.  We are grateful that they allow our 4 ½-year-olds access to their classrooms once a week.  These visits help our tamariki gain confidence to be able to transition to primary school with ease once they turn five.

We look forward to meeting you and are welcome to visit anytime.

This is truly "childcare like you've never seen before". Perfectly situated for families who live, work near, or commute through Manukau, Manurewa, Gardens, Flat Bush, Mission Heights, Ormiston, Takanini, Pukekohe, Papakura, Papatoetoe, Karaka, Drury, Waiuku and Pokeno.

Gaia (Earth) inspired Forest playground:

  • boost your child's well-being with essential Vitamin 'N' (Nature).
  • a genuine Forest Kindy / Bush Kindy / Nature Programme inspired by the Friluftsliv (open air) way of life in Scandinavia.
  • 10,000 sqm of NZ native forest to explore and play in each day;
  • beautiful and calming forest walkway as you drop off and pick up from the carpark;
  • shallow streams (with eels and fish) for our teachers and your child to discover and explore new life and changing scenes each day;
  • almost every NZ native species of trees is here to see, learn from, play around, and look after;
  • mud slide using our harvested rainwater for your preschooler to .... well you know the rest!

Gaia (Earth) inspired Bio-phyilic Building:

  • we adopted biomimicry techniques to design a building into the shape of a single leaf;
  • the building itself soars off the ground on tree hut style supports, like a leaf reaching out to touch the sky or a giant waka emerging out of a sea of green;
  • solar cells (i.e. first array is installed - total of 120 photovoltaics to be installed at a later stage to power nearly all of the building's needs - mimicking life-giving photosynthesis functions of a simple leaf);
  • rainwater harvesting (i.e. modelling Earth's sustainability principles like a lotus leaf does) . This supplies all our non-potable water for outdoor play, gardening, mudslide, laundry, and bathrooms;
  • building foundations deeply rooted like a myriad tree roots growing into the Earth itself;
  • heated floors for our babies so they can sense a warmth coming from the Earth;
  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2) monitors in our sleep rooms that activate smart ventilation if levels get too high;
  • natural ventilation (i.e. a building that breathes on its own, and further enhanced by NZ's first UVC lamp filtered heat pumps - see below);
  • your child will feel what it's like learning, playing, eating & sleeping inside a leaf (a beautiful memory for your child when he/she becomes the next guardian of our world and everyone/everything in it).

The Gardens Early Childhood Education - Hill Road

Our Hill Road Centre is located just a minute from the Botanic Gardens, Totara Park and the Southern Motorway. This places us in a prime location which is easily accessible for pick up and drop off. We have the perfect placement for community outings, picnics and events that are related to nature because we are located right across the road from Auckland Botanic Gardens.

Our Hill Road Centre, being a large scale facility, has separate indoor and outdoor areas for each age group to play and learn safely according to their developmental age and stage. This is a purpose built centre that we have equipped with modern, high quality equipment for your children. It also features an adventure playground that is specially designed to extend all children’s physical development.

Our Philosophy

Here at The Gardens Early Childcare Education we believe that children learn best through play and education at their own pace, level and ability.

The children are encouraged to make their own choices and decisions in play, where we aim to provide activities that encourage self-help and self care skills.

As educators we present opportunities for children to extend their skills, knowledge and attitudes by providing support, guidance and facilitating them within their play.

We recognise that parents fulfil the important role of primary caregiver and educator to the child. We believe open communication and participation are paramount for holistic development, and so develop warm and meaningful relationships with the children and their families. We value individuality, with flexible routines in a nurturing home and centre environment.

A bit about us...

Over the years, our committed team at The Gardens has successfully strived to provide a caring and educational environment for the many young children in our care. Our staff pride themselves on going the extra mile to meet the needs of both children and parents.

We are a community owned and operated company that is ever-expanding and growing to meet the needs of parents and whanau. We stand behind our team and our centres with pride and 100% confidence that we provide top quality and care and education.

About Us

History: choosing the name “Homai Nga Taonga”

The Trustees of Taonga Education Centre Charitable Trust believe it is important that the history of Manurewa is perpetuated as much as possible.

It was in the early 1920s that Manurewa began to be promoted as a convenient commuting suburb with its proximity to the railway. The name for the area came as a result of having a second station in Manurewa being built with funding raised by the local residents, together with the overhead bridge land donated by John Dreadon. It was a gentleman named Maurice Harding who suggested the name “Homai” meaning “a gift” so the station and the surrounding area would always recall the ‘gift’ of the residents in purchasing the land for the station, and the ‘gift’ of land given by Dreadon for the overhead bridge to be built…

It is interesting to note that pre-school education first took place in this area (Homai) in 1965 when the Foundation for the Blind facility in Parnell was proving too limited in space, and 55 acres were taken under the Public Works Act for the Ministry of Education to establish Homai College, and the first intake was of “blind or partially-sighted pre-schoolers”. The school which this centre is sited originally called Manurewa North School and opened in April 1955 now is Homai Primary School. Manurewa High School was built alongside in 1965.

We give this brief history as a forerunner to choosing our name for this centre. There is a long history of educational commitment and stability in this area. There has always been a desire for families to have access to social infrastructure. There is a clear message that children were, and still are, a primary focus. We believe “Homai nga Taonga” captures both the history of “the gift” and the God-given gift of a child, as well as our own name and acronym reflecting a “treasure” and ‘totally acknowledging our next generation’s abilities’.
